93 octane

I guess this is as good a place as any to ask what octane numbers are actually measuring -- percentage of octane? What's the rest, septane? nonane? Why does it matter? And is all the octane in petrol actually octane, systematically speaking, or is some of it methyl septane, dimethyl hexane, and friends?
