Do you mean test if your RAM chips are good? Memtest86 is really cool. Especially if you have a bootable CD-ROM.

To find out what the programs are in Task Manager, I usually just google them. There is the "Spy" tool that comes with the Microsoft Developer Studio that lets you view the entire process tree in great detail, so you could try that or an equivalent. You could also locate the file on the hard disk with a Search, and view its Properties to see its copyright information.
