I'm no gps pro, but can't you set your home as a way point and then use the gps to point you in the right direction when / if you get lost?

Yup. You can have your GPS track your every last movement if you like, showing a big long bread-crumb trail of where you've been. You can then always just turn around and re-trace that trail to get yourself out of whatever jam you might be in.
