What are the legal requirements w.r.t. a CCTV system these days? I was under the impression that if you're in a public place, and you're under CCTV surveillance, there needs to be a notice somewhere.

Is this still true? Was it ever true? What's the deal if the CCTV is on private land? What if it's on private property, but people on nearby public land can be seen with it? Are there any Data Protection Act provisions that apply?
