Avast if you like free.
Not bothered about free. Most of these free solutions only allow one free install per user (AVG did). Since I also have a laptop, I'd rather just pay some money and then not worry about it.
Is Avast any good?
The problems I had with AVG:
- It didn't work too well with fast-user-switching. For example, it would kick off a full system scan for every user currently logged on. Given that those users don't necessarily have read access to everything anyway, it would make more sense to do this as LocalSystem.
- If it missed a scheduled job (because it wouldn't run as a service), it would kick off the instant that you logged in, making everything grind to a halt.
- It would start the scan before it finished downloading the virus definition updates, making it pointless.
- The UI just generally sucked.
At work we use CA eTrust AV, and I was thinking about that, but I thought I'd get a second opinion from the BBS.
