I believe the ones in the kit have a forward voltage of around 3.3 volts. If you are using the kit resistors and your LEDs have a lower forward voltage, you may need to adjust the resistor values so as not to overload the drive circuitry in the display board. If they are 3 volts it should be close enough though.
