Hijack is the kernel, and continues to work correctly even if the player software is totally hosed. Even if the player isn't booting at all. If you remove the hard disk, you can still get to hijack. Try it some time, it's fun. 
Odds are, if the player software crashes or locks due to a bad track, you can still get to hijack.
It's the equivalent of ctrl-alt-del in windows... most of the time, you can get to the task manager and kill the offending process. Sure, sometimes it doesn't work, but most of the time it does.
