Is there any way while doing an append|search|insert to burrow down into the playlist/set of tracks you've just selected?

This is a much-requested feature, I agree. But I do not know if it will exist in 1.1 or not. It wasn't in the version that was seen at the Woodside meet (which is the same version I'm alpha-testing). Based on that information, I think it's unlikely that it'll make 1.1.
