Look at CHDK. It works with most recent (ie less than about 5 years old) canon compact cameras, basically most of the ones that are using a DIGIC 2,3, or 4 processor. It will allow intervalometer effects, as well as a lot of other cool things. I use it for some of my aerial photography.
