I'm a bit closer this morning after figuring out that my hub/router doesn't pass packets to IP addresses inside the LAN if they're not within the assigned DHCP range. That being fixed I was able to connect to the empeg's displayserver web pages. I tried launching the control applet & had partial success.

Let me backtrack a bit: I've installed the Jeode JVM ($20 at Handango.com) and registered its plugin with Pocket IE.

When I clicked "applet in current window" link I got a grey box with the Jeode JVM label, but the applet didn't load any further (although the grey area seemed the right size). I'm feeling encouraged and will poke around with some of the settings in the JVM to see if I can turn anything up. Getting closer.
