I have used Dado trunking (like you find in office spaces) to replace the skirting board on the wall behind the TV. It doesn't look too bad running at floor level and I can't say anyone has really noticed.

I use a variety of wall plates and holes drilled in it. I also minimise wiring as much as possible having as much near the source in a cupboard off to one side (under the stairs).
