I've tried several mice over the years in the office, and today I'd chose either a Logitech or a Microsoft, Logitech being generally my favorite among the two. Those are the only ones I actually really liked.
Today, I'd get either the Logitech Wireless Gaming Mouse G700 or the Performance Mouse MX . The reason being that they just feel wondweful in my hand (but that will not at all be true for you should you be left-handed).
Yes, they're full of buttons, but you can disable them. As far as I am concerned, they're so compfortable to use, that they're worrth the high cost.
It's too bad to read that battery life isn't as long as it used to be.
Also, I know you don't need/like too many buttons, as I used to feel like that. But, once I started to use the back/forward buttons under my thumb, life was good. My suggestion is to try.
