I thought that the second drive had the software already installed, according to the buyer it did.

Software is different between Mk1 and Mk2 players. Mk2 software on a Mk1 player is a no-no. Also, software version must match the emplode version, Emplode 1.03 against player 2.0b11 is a no-no.

Dunno if that's the reason, just a stab.
