When I first got my empeg Mark 2, with pre-1.0 software, it took about eight and a third seconds to boot, from power-on to music-out. (Yes, I'm really that anal that I timed it with a stopwatch.)

Now it takes 16.2 seconds.

Nothing has changed in the hardware, so I assume that it is changes to the software that has made it take nearly twice as long to boot as it did before. What were these changes, and were they really worth it?

Is 16.2 seconds a typical bootup time for a single-drive 18GB empeg?

They did increase the timeout period so that it takes longer to look for a second disk drive.

If you want to decrease the boot time, you can:

a) Use a hacked version of the kernel that doesn't bother to look for a second disk drive, or,
b) Add a second disk drive.

Still, even with one drive, 16 seconds sounds a bit long. Anyone else time their single-drive bootups?

Watch the boot log and see if it pauses anywhere. Remember that it'll take longer to boot on home power.
