Thanks!

Next one will use a better grade of wood, I think. Plywood still doesn't look great even after it's stained.

Tony,

You should try laminate over the wood. Fairly inexpensive, and all you need is some adhesive and a flush router bit. I used black laminate over plywood for my arcade cabinet, and couldnt be happier with the results.

Any way you would be interested in doing one for my MKI or sending me some plans that I could have someone else make one for me? I kind of like the wood idea better than metal, it's classy looking. I do know someone with woodworking skills.

Just a couple of ideas for the current version - If you have a router, you might try rounding the corners for a softer look. As far as the finish goes, you might try a couple coats of sealant to cover the grain and then paint it black. Black hides a multitude of imperfections I realize that that defeats half the purpose of using wood, but like you said, plywood doesn't have the most pleasing grain and color anyway.

Why not use a nice exotic wood like Rosewood or Coco Bolo. They look best without stain at all. You can even get Rosewood plywood for the top and front and use solid Rosewood for the sides. I know that's what I would do anyway.

Yes, laminate is the next thing I was considering. Although I prefer the look of solid wood, and I also prefer the look of stained wood over just plain black.

I actually have some better wood and I think the next one will just be done with that.

Any way you would be interested in doing one for my MKI .

Doing the woodworking is the hardest part for me, and after I finish the second one, I'll probably be completely burned out on woodworking for quite a while. So, I'd have to refuse.

or sending me some plans that I could have someone else make one for me?

There aren't any plans as such. This was kind of improvised. The only thing I did was to make some measurements and drew some rectangles in Corel Draw so I could decide on the size of the top, bottom, and front pieces so that I could get that 9 degree angle.

If you talk to your woodworking friend, he could probably come up with something much better if you showed him the photos and worked with him on the design.

Don't forget to allow enough space in the back for working with all the wires.

In reply to:

Plywood does not inherently have displeasing grain or color. It appearance depends on two things. The veneer used and the construction of the plys. If the edges are visible, it would be best plywood to use Baltic Birch plywood which has very thin plys. If the edges are hidden, it really can be hard to separate it from solid wood. The plywood used in his docking station is obviously veneered with rotary cut fir plywood like you find at hardware stores, which is not at all suited for fine woodworking. It's not even easy to make it look real good with paint.

Furniture grade plywoods which use quarter sawn or flat sawn veneers, are an excellent choice for the project as long as the edges are concealed.

You are of course correct. I was referring to fir or pine plywood like the stuff used to sheet floors and roofs. I use birch all the time when making cabinetry, and it looks great. With something this small though, using solid wood rather than cutting strips to cover the ply edges would be recommended.

Gee, I would love something like that for my stereo setup. Right now everything sits on a wire rack. How would I ask your dad and it would probably cost a lot to ship over the pond. You could ask him nicely for me and let me know how much it would cost

Hmm, I actually think it looks quite nice. I think the grain, finish etc all work well together. A satin finishing coat, something without too much shine would be perfect.

Looks great Tony, I was thinking of making one for myself but I only have one sled and it's in the car. Do you know where I could get another sled?

Order one before the Empeg International Store closes on May 31, 2002.

Help from Christian Williams might be necessary, though.

Hey Tony, thats a good one. It just happens that I am a really big fan of the back to the future movies, so I know what you are saying, I found the post from philp69 listing the part#s for the main connector so Im going to make one. Besides Christian`s Delorean won't help... I didnt see a flux capacitor anywhere in it

It's the newer model, the compact one. It's under the louvres with the upgraded Mister Fusion. They've done a lot to improve the system since Doc Brown's prototype.
