We haven't really had a chance to debug the sub out board. There was something not right with the ground. But after switching to digital power and ground on the digital out board this weekend, (the sub board depends on it for buffering) it seems to work. The sound has a bit of hiss in it, but I attribute that to the ceramic caps and low grade resistors used. As it is now, it should be fine for bass. We'll try another iteration with better components.

If you do ever decide you want a sub out board from us, you will have to also buy a digital out board. The sub out board is designed to plug right in to all I2S models.

We still need suitable software to enable the sub filtering. We currently have none. We have been running the sub board full range to test it.

Can you tell me to what kind of material could I connect if I order your board.

By example is it possible via coaxial to connect to a video amp that I use for my DVD player ?

I can understand that signals are digital but what to connect to ?

What In Car and Home environments are possible

If your video amp has an S/PDIF coaxial input capable of handling 44.1 kHz sampling rates at 16 bit resolution, then yes the same one you connect your DVD player to could also accept the output from one of our boards. Optical also works well with most AV receivers, which I assume is what your video amp is. Alternatively, you could use a dedicated digital to analog converter that accepts coaxial, optical or I2S digital signals and then connect its analog outputs to your video amp or car stereo amp.

A good quality digital to analog converter will sound better than the Empeg's hardware because of many factors including better power supplies, better converter chips, and better analog output stages.

It may sound like a silly question, but what is actually going on on that board? I thought I saw a BASIC Stamp. Is it a digital out or is some fancy DSP stuff? Looks very impressive whatever it is....

Nope, no BASIC stamp or DSP, too advanced me to tackle for now. Maybe in my DAC project I'll try some DSP work to get HDCD working on the digital filter. The big chip on the board is just a Crystal CS8405 IC that combines the various timing and data signals of an I2S stream into an S/PDIF stream. Thanks for the compliment on the boards.

From earlier e-mail discussions with him while he was building his sub out board, I think it just converts digital audio to analog. I'm not sure what that extra piece that looks like the stamp is on the board. Maybe it was on there for some other project. I could be wrong.

Yeah that's another project. MP3 related though. The "stamp" looking board is a carrier board that has a STA013 hardware MP3 decoder and a CS4334 DAC on it. I had a few samples and had hacked them onto a device we manufacture. It's always been something to add music/sounds to any product we make.

The bit appropriate to this thread is the smaller carrier board in the top left of the bread board. It's simply a CS4334 DAC and a HCT14 inverter used to buffer the signals.
