Too bad it was the "single DIN slot" thing that stopped him from keeping it. I mean, congrats on your score, too bad for him.

No one ever seems to realize that you stop using CD's when you get one of these things. Everyone seems to think that you need two stereos. Sigh.

A colleague at work was wanting a stereo that plays MP3s, he knows my empeg well and knows it rocks yet I *still* couldn't pursuade him against buying a Pioneer 9400 (cost over £500!). He still wants to play "compact discs" even though it will only take minutes to rip a CD and dump it over the network onto an empeg. The only point he does have is that he doesn't want to spend his life pulling an entire radio out every evening. It is *so* much easier to remove a face. Not that people don't smash windows to see if the face is in the glovebox :-(

And as I've said many times before, this is a positive feature for some people. The Empeg replaced a removable-face stereo that I had stolen, they are useless.

An empeg owning friend of mine recetly had a break in. They stole:

1 faceplace off the flashy Pioneer below the empeg and 1 container of change for the parking meters. They left everything else, including his CD wallet in the back. Was rather strange.

Nice response time! There is a reference to the bbs, seems he would have asked more for it, but I understand the one din theory, I had it too, until I saw the light. Not even sure where my cd's are now, in a closet somewhere.

Yeah, nice score! Too bad for him.

Yeah, my CD's have been in a large box for over 2 years now. I ripped them all to 8 gigs of MP3s over 3 weeks in the summer. Haha, it was an addicting process. I would do about 8 CD's a day. One when I woke up before the sun in the morning before going back to bed, one when I woke up for work, one before leaving for work, then I'd rip them all night after getting home.

If I was feeling rather abitious, I would extract digital audio to WAV files all day and write a massive DOS batch file to run l3enc (the best encoder at the time, in my opinion) to encode, rename, and organize all the songs. Then, I would let it run for 8 hours while I was at work. Of course, I was doing all this work on a P166 (for kicks) so l3enc could only do about 5 albums in 8 hours. Oh well, the goal was to keep the p166 working relentlessly at all times, and I achieved it. 8 gigs of mp3s in 3 weeks? Not bad for summer of 2000.

Just doublechecked with the owner, and yep, the empeg was sitting there still in the dash when it happened. He also informed me he had his digital camera and a few other minor goodies sitting in the back that they also didn't touch.

My "Jack" utility at my home page does precisely that. It supports L3enc and LAME by default, or any command line encoder you want to throw at it.

Hardly ever use it any more, but for a while, that's how I did it. Ripped track01 track02 etc. for several albums during the day, then let the encoder run batches overnight.

Yeah, This thing is unreal, can't remember last time i actually put a CD in my CD player !!
Between Empeg and DVD player , my CD collection is now in storage.
I've even started using it at work. Got sick of crappy radio stations.
8 hours non stop tunes (that i love) all night at work, makes the night go quicker !!
Awesome

yeah I listened to the radio the other day at work, and I got soooo frustrated. They played about 2-4 songs before each 5 minute commercial break. It was almost as bad as mtv. Love my empeg!!!

Only time I ever use my CD player is when I buy a new CD (well, technically a used CD), and I feel like listening to it on the way home (where it immediately gets ripped).

how 'bout it!! I have people telling me I need XM radio.. Why would I pay money to hear non-commercial laden formats of stuff I don't want to hear when I can bring all the music I DO want to hear with me!?!?

Hmmm.. let's think about that for a moment... hahaha

Not to mention that, supposedly, some of the stations do have commercials. OTOH, it could be a way to find music you like that you don't already know about. But having an empeg doesn't preclude having XM, too. Crutchfield sells a number of XM tuners that could attach to your empeg. The Jensen SSR2000 and the Sony DRN-XM01C2 can both attach to the aux input on your empeg, and most of the rest can send the music by attaching to your FM tuner, if you have one.

Yeah, mine is too. I wonder how many Empeger's ended up putting all their CD's in boxes?

Greetings!

I am using these nice DJ Cases from Univenture. The CDs are now sitting in the basement, safely stored for another day.

Ah, I don't know about the DJ sleeve cases. Jewel cases are still nice and convenient. Once I get a shelf to put the CDs on, I will pull them all out of storage. It's a kind of decoration, you know?

When people come to visit, they like to flip through CD's. I'm not sure you'll be able to impress your good taste in music upon any visitor (read: single girl) by telling them to cycle through your empeg playlists while hunched over the 128x32 screen. And if there IS anyone (read: single girl) that would be impressed by that, you should PM me at once. Haha, "empeg personals" anyone?

There are single girls that are impressed with cycling through the playlists hunched over the 128x32 screens but we already have our own empegs

It really sucks that my wife and I are musically incompatible. I wonder where I went wrong.

Heh. Maybe you two can have an empeg-date, and cycle through the playlists hunched over the 128x32 screens together. If things heat up nicely (and I don't mean from the HD in the empegs), you can move back a smidge and use the remotes...

Greetings!

...a shelf to put the CDs on...

True, they do make a nice decoration, but when the shelf turns into a bookcase or a wall, the reaction goes from being impressed by my taste in music into a reaction of sheer horror at what is obviously an obsession.

It would take more than just a few CDs to fill the 120GB of space you have.

I just got one of these from Boltz. They're regarded as the best CD racks out there, and I'd tend to agree. These things are built pretty solid. I also like that they're expandable. Oh, and they look nice with contemporary hi-fi stereo systems.

This might sound stupid to some people, but this is one of my top requirements for a woman. She should at least be open-minded to music and be willing to listen to different things. I don't want somebody who ONLY listens to Alternative or Hip-Hop or something.

Haha, "nice rack!" Ok, this topic is getting too hot for me to handle. Sorry for taking it off topic.

I love storing my CD cases on their side like that (as opposed to the damn horizontal slot holder things). Those holders look really nice.

I think we have a CD rack for Paul.

I know a lady that owns over 3000 Video's/DVD's. She has an entire room in her house devoted to storing them. It looks like a damn Blockbuster, and has WAAAY better selection. I was in awe, then the numbers started going through my head, and the I finally figured $75,000 is a LOT of money to pay for movies.
