I knew you guys got Futurama, but you get Family Guy as well?!?!? Us American folk don't even get those fine shows anymore! I'm gonna have to move to the UK.

Oh, totally - but if the unit has been stolen, and the police actually find it - they won't have the savvy to:
a) figure out what it is
b) find a power adapter to plug it in
c) come close to discovering that is has an ESN in flash ROM
At least with an 'old school' serial engraved into the unit, you stand a better chance of having someone discover that it's stolen, either by the actual number, or by the fact that the punk selling it has scratched it all up trying to eliminate the number!

Family Guy was a fine show? Maybe they show something different and call it the same thing up there in New York.

It's a superb show! I find it much funnier than the Simpsons (usually darker), way ahead of King of the Hill (I think you have to be American for that one to really work), maybe on a par with Futurama, and beaten only by South Park.

I disagree. I think the current method of having it in Flash is the best way. Engraved serial numbers can be easily sanded off or re-engraved by any thief (and they do precisely this sort of thing all the time so it's old hat to them), but there's no way for them to change/erase the serial number in flash without also making the player ubootable.

Protected flash seems pretty secure to me!
What about putting some form of empeg phone home feature into Emplode which announces the player's serial # to help detect the use of stolen players?

Tuffy makes a lot of fine products of this nature but mostly for Jeeps , Pickups and SUV's.
You might have to do a little searching on google for other manufacturers.

Yeah, I had to get the Futurama Season 1 DVDs from the UK. Thank god for my trusty old AD-600A. I have Season 2 on order from Germany.
I didn't know they had the family guy DVDs though.... I guess it's time to place another order.

Already been discussed. Very little benefit, and the technical support resources required to support the back-end of this kind of a system simply do not and cannot exist for an EOL product.

I agree that Flash is great, wouldn't get rid of it for the world - my point is that both are better than one, and a physical serial # is your first line of defense should some relieve you of your player.
When Police bust people for posessing stolen property, how do they know it's stolen? By examining and calling in the serial # of the unit, and having it run through the system. Failing that, by noting a glaringly obvious serial # removal job - ie scratched, sanded, overwritten. Not by flipping switches and turning dials to find a Flash s/n.
Of course there are professional thieves that will do a bang-up professional job of removing the s/n, but the majority of thieves are not pros, they are punk-ass kids out to make a few $$ and have a few kicks.
**Note** My Rio is at the engravers right now, getting name, rank, and serial # put on it...
Got my Pelican 1400 today too - grey, matches the interior of my truck nicely!

I'm assuming these are the same type of people that engrave diamond studded gold and platinum all the like. Steeling a mp3 player would be almost laughable to them.

i actually think the flash serial number is usless at this point. One should avoid leaving it in the car unattended.
But couldn't it go in as a undocumented feature that works with a 3rd party server that rio wouldn't be responsible for? It could just be put into a software release to call a home IP address when it is synced up and not labeled as a security implementation per se (to help absolve any implied responsibility on the part of RIO)
It could actually be used for other purposes as well.

I like your suggestions. I wonder if this could be a Hijack wish rather than burden the Rio/empeg guys further with our wants for this EOL player? I'm jumping the gun somewhat but if this happened then possibly a community run online database could collect all the data etc.
Edit: Hmmm, upon reflection, a non-Emplode version would be seriously hindered in it's potential ability to talk over the 'net.

Hehehee.. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks like that! I totally wanted to stay and wait for him to do it, but I had been up all night working, and he seemed to be quite 'trustworthy' so I allowed him to take charge of it.. got it back, all safe and sound. Nice job, but not very easy to read - the aluminium doesn't lend itself to very legible engraving, sadly... but I feel better knowing it's there, nonetheless!
Tonight my mission is to get my Pelican 1400 all sorted out, I will be visiting your site, Jets to get the visual clues for how you did it!

I mean.. someone among us has a server thats been up for years and if everything is ok will be up another couple of years
that we can use as that security database contact.
It could be a nice feature for hijack and Jemplode to implement.
I still have to add the disclaimer that I don't think it's worth doing, i'd rather see development for other features and owners should just be careful about where they leave their empeg (most are seemingly stolen from laziness or careless, i know that sounds harsh, but im prone to laziness too ) I know when i finally have some development time this winter, i won't be working on security.

Hijack can't do it alone because almost every Empeg has a non-routable address, so it can't phone anybody outside of the LAN.
JEmplode could do it.. but if you're a thief that just stole a cool looking hunk of metal that says Empeg/Rio on it, you go to empeg.com or SonicBlue and end up finding Emplode. But Emplode doesn't call home because they don't want to get involved, so the thief goes along his merry way synching or selling it to someone who does the same thing, and the server never hears a peep unless he happens to find and run JEmplode for some reason, whilst not having previously found and read this forum or the release notes that tell him that he's about to shoot himself in the foot.
And so you see: Simon and Simon were not brothers in real life... only on television.
