Well I woke up and smelled the coffee yet again today.

Just as I'm considering purchasing some WAP's for my home net work, I read an article in the latest PCWorld magazine....seems like there are some of us out there that cruise the streets looking for unsecured access points to exploit. When they find one, they mark the location so others may take advantage...great stuff

Here's a link for more info...

Yes. This has been around for quite a while, there are whole web sites devoted to it and that have catalogs of the symbols. Also they have fun photos of chalked locations.

I think I saw that article, but I could have sworn it was in MacAddict. It has been around a while, but my favorite part of the article was where they talk about how the name derived from ``wardriving'' (where you drive around with a laptop searching for open wireless networks), without mentioning that it, in turn, derives from ``wardialing'', which derives from the movie ``WarGames''. Odd that they didn't mention it at all.

Anyone know a good site to look for war-dialed points? I want to see if mine has been found...

I am not 100% certain, but, if memory serves, I think it would be more correct to say "'wardialing' which was popularized by the movie 'War Games'".

Certainly people were performing the action that we now call wardialing before WarGames came out, but I believe that the term was inspired by the movie.

Edit: Before that, it was called demon dialing, IIRC. Also, I always wondered how a popular rap artist got his moniker from a phreaking tool.

Fair enough . I can't find any reference to the contrary.

I actually never called it wardialing, but always referred to it as demon dialing.

It seems that the Term warchalking / wardriving may be misunderstood in some cases. Since I'm writing on a book about wireless lans, I found a site called www.wardrivingisnotacrime.com, which I find quite useful.
Please note that there are different people with different meanings of wardriving or warchalking. If your opinion differs, please let me know, maybe I can use it for my book.

By the way: If you did some funny or tricky things with wireless lan and the empeg, please let me know

regards,
Rolf
