I have a mac running OS X and just downloaded jemplode, now I have to get the 2.0 kernel into my empeg, is this the same thing as the hijack kernel? Also when I go to intsructions for downloading the hijack(2.0 ?)kernel on the mac it says I am "SOL" but they have a version of jemplode specifically for OS X, and on the same page it says it requires the 2.0 kernel. so do I find someone with a pc to download the kernel in my computer?

2.0 (currenly in beta 13) is the official Empeg software. Hijack is a patched kernel that you can install once you have 2.0 running on your empeg. You can download 2.0 from here.

I don't believe you will be able to install 2.0 or Hijack with MacOS 9 and I don't think tools exist for OSX yet either.

The 2.0 software is not the same thing as Hijack.

However, do you even have a serial port on your Mac? I don't think that most new Macs do, but I could be wrong. If not, you'll have to get one of those first, otherwise there will be no way to install new factory empeg software.

2.0 Kernel != Hijack, but from an installation standpoint they both suffer from the same basic problem on the Mac.

The deal is that I have yet to get figure out how to get a reliable serial connection w/ Java on the Mac. Interestingly you might have better odds with OS 9 than X, but you're kind of on your own getting it configured (you'd have to track down a javax.comm implementation for 9).

I'm getting closer on this problem (I am actually at least able to see the Empeg over a KeySpan USB serial adapter in OS X, but it fails when downloading the database), but it's not something that's going to happen any time soon (this is a fairly low priority).

In the meantime, the only option for getting Hijack and/or the latest kernel on is to either run VirtualPC (several people have reported success with this) or find a friend with a Windows box that you can borrow just long enough to install both of them.

At the current time, you need to borrow a friend's Windows PC to put the 2.0 software onto the empeg. Or you need to run a Windows Emulator on your mac, and get an RS-232 serial port working with the Windows emulator.

Emplode is the PC side of the software. You also need an ".upgrade" file to send to the player. That's the player firmware. It includes a kernel as well as all of the on-disk software for the player.

Hijack is an add-on aftermarket hacked kernel replacement that should only go in place after the 2.0 software is fully installed and running.

More details here and here.

Or a machine running little-endian Linux (not any other Unix-like OS). Which means your (little-endian PowerPC) Mac is out, even if you installed Linux or even booted off a Linux CD.

I'm sure you meant big-endian PowerPC, but just to keep the confusion to a minimum..
