Is there something busted on the Main Index page that causes it to lose the alternating colour bars? It is damn difficult to read now.

Not busted, just changed design. It's all in this thread.

It changed with the last software upgrade. I think it is in part down to the color scheme used -
If you take a look at www.wwwthreads.org at their demo board which uses the new default
color scheme then it doesn't look too bad. I may have a play around with the color scheme to
see if I can come up with something that works a bit better.

Okay I've fixed it up slightly to make it more readable - not sure about the orange
as the border color but I've got to log off now - any suggestions welcomed...

Cheers

I would definitely prefer a more subdued border color. This is a bit blinding for me.

Actually, you were making incremental changes while I was browsing through the board. An interesting experience. :)

It certainly fixes the functionality - but it's a shame it looks so terrible!

Are you sure the alternating row colours can't be put back on the main index? If not, maybe a dark grey border colour would do the trick.

I also feel the color of the borders is not yet perfect. However, it's not only the main index page that was much harder to read - also the postings themselves, when viewed in flat mode and with the headers on the left side, ran into each other, which made them very hard to read. So, Paul, please try to change the color of the borders (did you try plain black?), but don't turn them off totally again.

Daniel

Are you guys nuts?

Maybe I'm seeing this board now after it has been changed again (it would be just after Midnight Sunday Morning Eastern Standard Time as I write this) but I think this bbs looks incredibly great right now!

It is so bright, vibrant, almost alive looking, and with the clear demarcations between post titles it is easier than ever before to read.

My only complaint is that for some reason when I experiment with display preferences, swapping around threaded vs flat, and collapsed vs expanded modes, it keeps defaulting to sort by ascending date instead of descending. Probably in flat mode you would want to sort ascending anyway, so maybe when I changed to flat it automatically changed the sort? Of course since I have now decided that my preference remains Threaded/Collapsed, I won't be playing around any more and I won't have to worry about the sort order, unless it somehow changes on its own, that is...

Anybody have any ideas on advantages/disadvantages of the four display modes, i.e., Threaded/Expanded, Threaded/Collapsed, Flat/Expanded, Flat/Collapsed?

Anyway, even if I'm in a minority, I love the new bbs display settings!

It's only the colour of the border that is the problem now. The orange is just too bright, it distracts your attention from the contents of the message. Once it has changed to a more subtle colour (light or dark grey) it will be fine.

Perhaps you've got the brightness turned down too far on your monitor

I like the current layout too. I don't think the orange borders are too overpowering, they set it off nicely (in my opinion)

not sure about the orange as the border color

Great . . .that you're unsure about it
*Please* find something quieter.
Remember, this whole thing started when Rob Schofiel asked to have the bi-color purple back, which -- I thought -- was a good idea.
But these orange borders are horrible IMHO, easily at par with the worst things I've seen on the web .
If you can't change, I might consider Merlin's scrape list. . How's that as a threat.

- any suggestions welcomed...
The two-coloured purple that Rob S. asked for, was great
May be dark grey, or black, if you really think borders are needed.
Or the version before the orange border (single purple)
Anything, but stuff with a lot of orange, yellow or white . . .

Seriously, I don't find these orange borders an improvement . .

Okay Rob I after some playing around I think you are
right about the dark grey.

I'll do some digging to see what happend to the alternating
menus.

PaulH

ps. If I don't get a free Mk2 then its going to revert
to bright orange .
