Does anyone know what the cost for service is for a dead drive through sonicblue?

I just realized that my empeg must be out of warranty range now and I'm wondering if just contacting IBM(?) about the dead drive might be better than sending the thing all the way to england where they'll probably just do the same... because I know IBM drives have a warrenty of 2-3 years or so. Hell, I got 2-30gig drives in there anyway and I can get away with just 1 drive since all my CDs only total to about 15gb in the first place.

Actually, when was the big sell off from the US sonicblue store? All my financial documents are 60 miles away

Chances are that IBM won't accept repair/RMA requests from you because it's likely that it was sold as an OEM drive for which end-user requests are not allowed.

So contacting SonicBlue, specifically David is probably the best way to go, if not the only way. There was a recent thread about how he was off for Christmas, though, and I didn't really follow the policy exactly, so you might want to take a look.

Yeah, I got the off for christmas email...
I'm more worried about cost though... money isn't flowing as freely as when I bought the empeg. And I was under the impression that it was still under warranty, but now I can't figure out when I bought the damn thing...

Oh man... something just clicked in my brain and I just remembered where I put my printed out receipt... it's been sitting under the table where my monitor is about a foot away from my feet

And it is still under warranty for another month!

Oh happy days...

If it was purchased in the fire-sale, then very likely the warranty is still valid. In that case shipping is free and repair will cost you nothing. Just make sure to follow the steps David mentioned in the other thread to make sure you get you request in for warranty service, even though it will be after the holiday.

I pulled my old drive out last year. Put it in a laptop and ran IBM's Drive Fitness Test (DFT) and called IBM with the error codes. 3 year warranty on the drive. They issued a RMA for me and a couple of weeks later (or maybe less... can't quite remember now) I had a spankin' new drive in my empeg.

I stand corrected. I seem to remember that some other people did have problems doing this, but it may have been with different manufacturers.
