I'm sitting here listening to soma fm thinking, occasionally it WOULD be nice to listen to one of soma's streams while driving....... hmmm, wifi in the car....

Granted, the infrastructure isn't there yet, but I can't imagine it would be impossible to implement. You'd need a module that could provide the ethernet connection to the empeg, after that it's all just software isn't it?

Come to think of it, there are times I'd like to listen to streaming music without my PC on. Even @ Home this would ber really cool.

What would it take?

Is the file reader a separate module from the player? Can we just feed it raw data? m3u files with the URL of various stations......

The rioplay that grgcombs helped modify can play network streams, IIRC.

Greg has helped modify it so that it will run on the empeg. Read that thread I linked.

The reciever isn't really what I'd look for appearance wise. I want a piece of sterio equipment to look

1. Strong
2. Built to mil spec.
3. High tech.

To me it looks like they went for

1. "Fun"
2. "Tech"
3. Playdough

I'd be willing to bet it hasn't sold as well as it might have if they'd made it look a little more like, say the Audiotron..

Even better would be if they'd integrated a CD/Mp3 player in it.

Well Wi-fi isn't always possible.

But in some places, including Denver *drools* ...

Ricochet!

The average people see is about 400kbit/s, but most people can get 700kbit/s and easily burst to 1.5mbit/s.

It's quite amazing to see in action at 70mph on the high way

So what's wrong with using an Audiotron? It's metal, hifi component sized and it's hitech...

The clock display is ugly though which is a bit annoying.

The idea (mine anyway) is to support SB so the brilliance that came up with the empeg doesn't scatter to the winds.......

(BTW, SB better come up with something pretty quick. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out! (thinking IPOD and AUDIOTRON))

It's bigger! It's better! It's.....

$1200!?!?!? ummm, no. But then again.....

I'd like to see "out of the box" compatibility with emplode (or something like it)

Integrated ethernet!!!!!!! COMON! Totally ridiculous. This was the killer for me. They integrated hpna but didn't put a friggin' ethernet port on the board. (FYI: dongles are a pet peve. My laptop is, and forever shal be sans-dongles)

Otherwise it looks like a great product.

I totally understand about dongles on a laptop, but when it's a stationary unit, what's the big deal?

And the answer to your question is that the Central is marketed towards people who don't necessarily have a PC or, at least, don't have shared directories of MP3s. It's meant to simply be one of your pieces of audio electronics.

Since someone mentioned rio central I have to state once again I will buy one when I can sync it with the empeg. I would be happy if I had to do it through emplode and connect both devices to my network as long as I can just click one thing and have them both end up with the same music.

I think anyone that is in the market for a Rio Central probably already has a PC.... but you're right, even though said consumer most likely has a pc - they might not have mp3 shares set up on it.

But, this is where that new SB GoVideo DVD player can step in... (or was that already mentioned in this thread... or was it in its own thread... oh im foncused they're all running together!!)

Actually, back on Elvis's original question - I was thinking about the situation later on after I read the initial thread... one advantage of being able to stream from networked PCs to the Empeg would be for the digital out board... if I have more mp3s stored on my pc - or lets say some other stream or media or whatever - I could take advantage of the digital out that goes right to my stereo.

Of course, though, I would probably already have whatever mp3s I wanted stored on the empeg anyway. But, just for thought anyway...

Didn't someone manage to mount an NFS volume on the empeg? If you left it at home, it might be possible to use an NFS mount as the second drive, I suppose.

Oops. Good point

I wonder if you could transplant the guts of a Rio Receiver into a hi-fi component case? To make the LCD brighter we could use something like the Afterburner for the GBA. Not sure how to improve the contrast though but there are special replacement polariser films for laptop LCDs that could be used.

The Rio Central uses Emplode already. I use 2.0 beta 13 with the Central right now.

And while I agree that integrated ethernet was a silly omission (they lobbied very hard to get it integrated, but lost to the suits), adding the USB-ethernet adapter is easy and inexpensive.

For some reason I'm getting a "Read the FAQ" vibe... nutz.

...suits...

'nuff said.

Ahhh Ricochet... I was a beta tester in SF when they first came out. Absolutely awesome, taking the train down to the penninsula and having email nearly the whole way. Train moved just slow enough where the handoffs were nearly seamless. At the time (1996) it was just as fast as most modems, not nearly enough by todays standards but back then...sniff <me wipes a tear from the eye>....
