I got a Transcend 128MB USB memory key for xmas and it worked great, the first time. Now on my win2K machine (with SP3) installed it only comes up as a "USB Mass Storage Device" with a little yellow exclaimation in it; as below:

Does anyone know how to get it mounting as a normal storage device?
I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, finding windows updates, everything.
It works on my other win2K and Linux boxes so I know it's not dodgy.

thanks for any help.

Greetings!

It is likely that you need to load a driver into the W2K environment before connecting the memory drive to the machine. Did the drive come with a CDROM?

I have a compact flash device (reader/writer/card) that works the same way. The driver needs to be loaded first, and then it will find the drive.

That's what I thought as well but he said it worked the first time around. Bit strange.

I thought it was tried for the first time on the W2K box...

In any case, I would recommend looking at their web site (if I remember correctly, try their site for any drivers for W2K. When I did mine, I found I had a lot of trouble with the driver - I needed to install the driver, reboot, and disable my printer driver (I have a USB connected HP OfficeJet class machine with a very poorly behaved driver) or I would get a blue screen. Once I figured this out, it has worked flawlessly each time. This is with a Compact Flash card with a BusLink reader/writer.

Oh. Hmm... Yeah. You're right

It can't hurt to update the drivers anyway

See, There's the confusing part. The only drivers they have on their site are for w98, which don't work in 2000/XP.
Because the drivers are loaded automatically on the other machine, I can't even find out what inf files it looks at. I could try and audit on the winnt directory though.

WOW!
I got it working, kinda. Thanks Paul!
If I unplug my Canon Scanner it loads the driver more often than not. Now I've just got to fiddle with the combination of ports to see if they can be loaded at the same time.

Thanks everyone

I think I have it figures out. I now have the scanner into the very first USB slot on the mobo; my USB hub is plugged into the first port on the second USB header and the memory key plugs into that. Plug and play my ass. I'm sure I'll need to do a few reboots to see if this config works, but at least it does.
thanks again

Greetings!

Very cool! I don't know what it is, but some device drivers get really tempermental. At least yours behaved sanely - when I plug my CF reader in with the other driver loaded, I get an instant blue screen. That is how I eventually traced it.

Good luck with it. The right combination should be able to get you there. Worst case, you could always just unplug the scanner if you need to use the drive. Crude fix, but effective.

Ack. It's broken again. More testing is necessary.
