First, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has developed and maintained the FAQ and this forum. I successfully added a Fujitsu 10 Gig hard drive to the original 12 Gig IBM drive. This would not have been possible without the comprehensive information available through the empeg community.

Now could someone tell me where in the FAQ I can learn how to monitor my free hard drive space?

If you're using emplode, it's shown in the info bar at the bottom of the window once you connect to your empeg.

I am surprised that I missed that! Thanks.
It seems that I have a total of 20.4 GB available from what should be 22 GB before loading the developer software and hijack. I'm already down to 7.39 GB. At this rate, I'll be upgrading my hard drives again within the year.

Well, in reality, not all of that 1.6 GB is the software. It's largely drive manufacturers lying to you:

22(fake)GB =
22,000,000,000B =
22,000,000,000B * 1kB/1024B * 1MB/1024kB * 1GB/1024MB =
22,000,000,000B * 1GB/1,073,741,824B =
20.489(real)GB

Absolutely. I thought I would explain a little further though. The difference is in the system of counting used. Hard drive manufacturers use a traditional base-10 approach:
1 kilobyte = 1,000 bytes
1 megabyte = 1,000,000 bytes
1 gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes

However, computers use a binary system for everything including locating data. Thus, instead of 1000 as the base unit, they use 1024 (2^10).

1 kilobyte = 1,024 bytes
1 megabyte = 1,048,576 bytes
1 gigabyte = 1,073,741,824 bytes

Everybody, including the software you use, uses the binary system when referring to computers instead of the base-ten system except the drive manufacturers. They aren't exactly lying, just being deceptive.

You're welcome.

I didn't start it, of course, and I didn't come up with all of the answers, but I have been the maintainer for a long time.

Remember that loading the developer software and Hijack do not alter the amount of free space on the music partition. FAQ entry is here.

At least the hard drive manufacturers aren't nearly as bad as the people who make power supplies. I've added up the numbers on the side before to find that my 300 watt power supply could only provide 220 watts max. I really don't know how they manage to get away with lying.

I don't know that I can agree with either your distinction or, even if I do assume your distinction, that that's not lying.

If I were I gas station proprietor and put up a sign that said I was selling gas for $1.159 a gallon and then had small print at the bottom of the sign that said ``Oh, by the way, that's a UK gallon'', I'd have to say that that was tantamount to lying.

Okay, so there's a difference in that at least drive manufacturers all fudge their numbers by the same scale, so you can compare, but still....

However, assuming your in the US, having it being a UK gallon is better for you, so you wouldn't complain. Remember a UK gallon is quite a bit larger than it's US version.

A UK fluid oz is 4% bigger then it's US equiv.

A UK pint has 20 fluid oz, where the US has 16.

Both have 8 pints.

Hmmm. I was thinking it was the other way around. But you're right. Regardless, you get my point.
