I've been using my brothers Garmin Venture.. All it took was a serial cable, a gender changer and a null-modem changer.. Works just fine..

Is the empeg screen good enough to make the system usable ?

Heck yea.. The Garmin Venture doesn't have a road database (just Points of Interest) So the route feature of GPSApp is awesome.. The biggest benefit of the empeg has to be when driiving at night. Since the Venture is a handheld GPS, it runs off batteries which the backlight feature would run down. You can buy a serial/charger cable, but it's like $50 or something. Besides, looking at the screen while driving has to be a hazzard.. I'm sure that a Car oriented GPS would be just as good, but I'd like to be able to use the GPS even when I'm not in my car..

I remeber a thread about a $100 radio shack serial GPS for the car. Has anyone logged some time with this unit yet and have opinions on it?

It should work just fine, I used my Garmin GPS V to test GPSapp before I had a cheap receiver mounted in the car. Just make sure to check the settings, as my V unit offered quite a few serial output options. NEMA output is probably the best.
