I got a USR 5610b modem and installed it in a machine. It works fine as a modem, but I'm trying to get an extension phone (off the modem) to ring when a call waiting tone comes in. Call waiting works. I'm not blocking call waiting. If I block it, I get a busy. Unblocked, I get rings forever on the line and none on the phone.

The old call waiting modem worked fine with Windows 98 but has a known problem with XP, so it shouldn't be a line problem; The phone rings fine when the computer isn't connected.

The USR "Internet Call Notification" software claims it can't find a valid modem, but the USR Control Center software finds the modem just fine.

I'm at a loss. I suspect I could recover if the software wouldn't try to be helpful and not run.

Any thoughts?

Actually once I find the right place, "no ICN in XP" is a known issue. No clue if it fixes the real thing I care about, namely "extension doesn't ring while connected"

It still doesn't ring (well, playing a tone to the computer speaker would be fine but it doesn't do that either) and his ISP doesn't have v.92 support, but at least it doesn't hang the system when it got a call like the Actiontec Call Waiting modem did under XP.

Sigh.
