I remember buying them for $1.50 a box, $1.75 a box, $2.00 a box, and $2.50 a box. I bought 15 (fifteen) boxes this year though because we missed them so much when nobody came by to sell them last year.

Has anybody bought Jack Daniels Whiskey lately? The price has tripled in the past 3 years. Anybody know of a good similar bourbon? I have some Jim Beam, Johnny Walker, and Military Special, but I've always prefered Jack Daniels for a Whiskey Sour.

not sure your standards of formatting for recipes, so bear with me.

prep : ~25 minutes.

bake time ~10 min per batch

oven temp : 375 f

recipe yield : ~60 cookies





3/4 cup butter/margarine

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 cup sugar (granulated)

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/4 cups flour

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup (heres where the butterscotch came in) chopped nuts

   or chocolate chips or variant



1. beat butter and peanut butter at medium speed until combined. add sugar, brown

sugar, baking powder, and baking soda. beat until combined. beat in eggs and vanilla.

beat as much flour in as can be, stirring in the rest. stir in oats and your form of nuts/chips.



2. drop rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. 375 f about

10 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned. let cool.

Tell me about it, this is the first year my kid's been in Girl Scouts. As someone who has loved Thin Mints for decades, you have no idea how tempting it was to order up several year's supply of Thin Mints...

JD isn't bourbon, for one thing. It's Tennessee whiskey, which is very similar, but if you're buying bourbons, that's probably why you can't find one that's close enough. George Dickel is the only other one that comes to mind.

Both Tennessee Whiskeys and Bourbons may or may not use sour mashes. The only difference between Tennessee and Bourbon, AFAIK, is that Tennessee Whiskeys are (maple) charcoal filtered, and Bourbons are not. (I think that the actual legal difference may solely be that one is distilled in Tennessee and the other is not, but the charcoal is the difference people have come to expect.)

Thin mints are quite excellent. Definitely the GS cookies to buy. The rest of the year I live off Soft Batch chocolate chip cookies. Soft Batch kicks the ass of all other store-bought cookies. If any of you are Chips Ahoy fans, all I can say is their cookies and AOL discs make great coasters.

Bourbon whiskeys can only be brewed in Bourbon county, Kentucky. I know that much at least. I didn't know about the charcoal filtering difference and I was a little fuzzy on some of the rest. Pointing out the specifics does help me figure out exactly what to get as a replacement.

My main point is, I have 7 different kinds of whiskey (Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey 101, Johnnie Walker Red, Crown, Seagrams VO, Chivas Regal. I had 9, but I drank the Bookers and Military Special recently), but nothing really comparable to Jack Daniels when I run out. I guess I want another sour mash whiskey, possibly from Tennessee that is of good quality and fair price. I've had some mighty poor liquor in the past, some of which was quite expensive.

Jack Daniels went from about $22 a handle (1.75 liters) to about $65 a handle in just about 3 years.

Actually, that's where the Bourbon name comes from, but there's no legal requirement about distilling bourbons there. You cannot call a whisky a Kentucky whisky without it being distilled in Kentucky, though.

You probably can't tell the difference between a sour mash and a sweet mash whisky these days, and I doubt you can find a sweet mash whisky anyway.

According to the local ABC pricing chart, Jack Daniels is still around $22 here. Are you sure that your taxes haven't just gone up?

I'd still suggest George Dickel as an alternative, but the price difference here is minimal. There's also Gentleman Jack, which is an ``upscale'' Jack Daniels, so it's not likely to appeal to your ``cheaper'' criterion.

I know that every liquor store in the Athens, GA area has gradually raised their prices on Jack Daniels over 3 years. I know the same thing has happened in Auburn, AL. There don't seem to be any major differences in any other alcohol, just Jack Daniels.

Bourbon was first made in 1789 or thereabouts. Its primary difference was that it was aged in charred oak barrels. It can be a blend of straight whiskeys, a sweet-mash, sour-mash. It can be brewed in Kentucky, Tennessee, or presumably, anywhere. Kentucky is generally better associated with Bourbon because that is where it is originally created. Bourbon County also has exception water that is ideal for making whiskey.

Tennessee whiskey is also called Tennessee Bourbon. It is straight sour mash whiskey made from a mash containing at least 51% grain (normally corn) and filtered through charcoal. Straight whiskey means that there can be no additives: the final product is mixture of the whiskey and water.

The terms sour mash and sweet mash refer to the yeasting process and do not, in any way, refer to the sweetness of the resulting flavour. Sour mash "means that a certain proportion of the mash must contain stillage or spent liquods (sans alcohol) that remain from the previous distillation. This is mixed with fresh mash."

I've had Jack Daniels, Bookers, and Wild Turkey. I'd say the Bookers was best out of those, but I think it was about $80 for a liter. Any recommendations for a good bourbon that is under $30 for a handle (1.75 liters)?

Thin Mints are the bomb. But try the Mint Fudge Covered Oreos. They are just like thin mints, except better. They have now officially taken the title of the best pre-made cookies in the universe. I always bought many boxes of Thin Mints every year, but with apologies to little girl scouts everywhere, they are no longer necessary.
