Some of you may remember a little site I made quite a while back with various graphic downloads that I either made or found on this site. The site was hosted on a free server and had a million annoying pop-ups. Well, I decided to put it back up, this time on a real host. It is just as it appeared back then, but I will update it in the coming weeks.

Things you'll find there:
anna-vu images
tux much image
boot animations
image pans

and soon: static boot images.

If anyone has any images that can't be hosted on RioCar.org because they are offensive or are borrowed (like the perfectly sized animations from Panasonic players) just email them to me and I will put them up. I promise to be better about this than in the past. Before, I'd be emailed someone's graphic, load it on the player, do a screen grab, colorize the image and then zip the whole thing together with a readme.txt file detailing how to use the download. With Tony's new LogoEditor, this looks like it will be much easier.

www.persiconi.com/wrx/downloads/downloads.html

If anyone sees anything THEY created and would like removed, please let me knwo and I'll take care of it for you (appologies in advance).

PS - Any WRX and Subaru owners will find some cool stuff here.

Cool! Send them my way! I did a "Hugo in a box" boot logo once that I think is on RioCar.org. Maybe we can have a theme!

This is all pretty cool.

I do fractal backgrounds and animations (see mangled attachment) and I'd love to produce some of these for the empeg. However, I haven't yet found any resource that tells me what format to put my files into in order to upload them to the empeg. Do I use RLE? What headers do I put on the file? I'm assuming four colour, but is that the limit? How big can I go? I can program in Delphi and Perl, and I'm not averse to trying to make a tool that converts ordinary bitmaps into the appropriate format, but would I be duplicating someone's effort (and if so, where is it)?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Paul, this is a FAQ entry. It's right here.

By the way, what program did you use to create that fractal?

Edit: I just realized that I need to update that entry a bit since I added some features to the logo editor.

This animation I made wasn't "approved" by riocar.org
(Click the black rectangle if it doesnt start.)

You can download it, and add it to that site if you like...
(Heh, I even made a poll a little while back, and got pretty bad feedback.)

Yeah, I haven't played with Fractint in a while. I should mess with it some more.

Last time I played with it, it was still 256-colors only. I assume from your picture that one can do high-color with it now?

Edit: I realize now that it was PaulWay's picture, not yours. But I see that fractint does highcolor now. Those highcolor video modes don't work in a DOS window on my PC, but maybe I can locate some kind of a VESA extender for win2k.

Paul, looks like Tony answered your question. Back when I started the page, there were a lot of posts on how to make these. Someone made a utility to convert images into .raw files. Is that at RioCar.org? The Image Pans can be any size (I like to keep them close to the Image Pan that comes with the empeg software.

The Image Pans can be any size

I'm not sure, but I think there's a memory limitation as to how big they can be. Dunno what that limitation is, so it would be good to keep it close to the same size.

I also recall there being a size limit - for some reason 64k pops into my mind. I remember there being a thread about it and playing with images to try to determin the limit... But it could have been a x*y limitation also/instead.

Based on that thread (and some experimentation to fill in the blanks) I wrote the attached python script that can read both compressed and uncompressed empeg image files and dumps them to PPM format. I also had one that worked the other way around, compressing a PPM image down to compressed empeg format, but that one completely lacks any form of usability and documentation

The attachment seems to have failed, I'll try again when I get better connectivity

What's the PPM format?

I just added a new Image Pan that was submited to me. It's the circuit board from an empeg Mk1. So, if you have a Mk2 or Mk2a but want your player to have the heart of a Mk1, now is your chance!

PPM == Portable PixMap file format. There's a whole suite of pipelined tools (as well as programming libs) for converting / manipulating images using PPM as the intermediate and/or external format. Linux/Unix of course.

In reply to:

Paul, this is a FAQ entry. It's right here.

Yes, but nowhere can I find a description of the format of the files. I must be dense. Are they just Windows bitmaps, raw 24-bit RGB, raw 6-bit RGB, four-colour grey-scale, or what? I can't seem to find a tool that will take an ordinary bitmap and produce either a raw file or upload it.

I would like to write one if I can - I know how to do RLE compression as long as I know what escape sequence you use (if any). Just give me information about file formats. I might even be able to make it do the upload as well given time...

In reply to:

Fractal eXtreme. The wonder tool of Mandelbrot exploration. It revolutionised my life (I'm not kidding )

Have fun,

Paul

Trying again, the comments in the file describe the format.

Ok, the server clearly doesn't like ascii files that don't have a '.txt' extension. I'll just cut and paste it here... Awww, it also strips indentation which is kind of important for python scripts...

I'm giving up on trying to make the BBS work. I'll link it from the gpsapp page, just follow the link in my signature.

Don't worry, I am dense. I didn't realise that RAWerter was for reading and writing these files, and thought it was to upload/download them from the empeg. Oh well.

*gives vigourous wedgie to self* Ow!

Yes, but nowhere can I find a description of the format of the files.

Unless you're planning on programming the files yourself, you don't need to know the file format. Just use one of the tools (such as Logo Editor or RAWerter) and paste your picture from the Windows Clipboard into that tool.

Fractal eXtreme. The wonder tool of Mandelbrot exploration.

Cool! Downloading the demo version now. Thanks!

If I can make it work, I'll give you step by step instructions on how to put a fractal into the empeg from Fractal eXtreme if you like.

Ah, too easy. In Fractal Extreme, press the "Copy" button. In RAWerter, press the "Paste" button, and save it.
