Just curious: the empeg, just sitting on my desk, gets plenty warm. Nothing I am worried about, but I am curious where the heat is generated mostly in the unit.

VFD? Hard-drive? Processor?

It feels hotter over top of the right-hand side, where the drive is, but if I recall (having seen the guts first-hand in a dream or something) correctly, the processor is at the front-right corner as well, yes?

I've noticed that mine generates different amounts of heat when I've got it plugged in at different places. Never really hot, mind you, but pretty warm to the touch sometimes. Could it be the difference in the power supplies at each locations, since most of mine are scrounged? Could I be damaging the unit?

One thing, though... the VFD actually has heating elements stretching across its face.

I don't know why the VFD has to be heated to work properly, I'm not up on that technology.

Hugo did say that it was the VFD that generated so much heat.

The hard disks can get quite hot as well, but they're usually spun down, so this isn't such a problem.

Generally, though, it is the VFD.

Gas plamsa flouresces if you hit it with a voltage; to create the plasma, you heat a gas up and then inject electrons.

Back when I had my Mk1 I grabbed some thermal images while the unit was running. If anyone wants to see them they are here. Maybe if I want to void my warranty, or if I get permission from empeg I could get some internal images from my Mk2.

I don't remember exactly, but it might be the power block for the camera.

Does this bbs have truly impressive examples of geekdom, or what?! I mean, where else would you find somebody to take infra-red pictures of his stereo and post them on his website?

Brian, you make me proud to be a member of this bbs community!

Thanks for the vote of geekness. I'm proud to be a geek and will try and come up with other strange feats to post.
