My car was recently broke into and the amp was stolen (thank goodness they left the empeg) and wanted to replace it. I am broke so I can't afford much, but was curious on how much of a difference the different watts. My old one was only 75 watts per channel. However, I don't really have that great of speakers so I figure it doesn' matter if I have much more wattage. So does it make that much of a difference?

Congratulations on NOT having your empeg stolen!

My old one was only 75 watts per channel.
If that's 75 watts RMS, then that's actually pretty powerful.

Manufacturers usually label their amps with the peak power rating, which is meaningless (they can essentially make up a number). When comparing amp power, always compare the RMS wattage.

The RMS wattage is often in fine print on the box. Some retailers such as Crutchfield choose to list all of their products with the RMS numbers (I always respected them for that).

However, I don't really have that great of speakers so I figure it doesn' matter if I have much more wattage. So does it make that much of a difference?
To a point, yes, more wattage does make a difference. A decent amount of power will make the music sound cleaner and better even at low volumes (as long as you set your amp gain controls right and you don't blow your speakers by trying to play them too loud). Also, think about the possibility that you might one day upgrade your speakers, and you'd want a decent amp to drive them.

I don't know what kind of speakers you have and what you're car's like. But if it were me, I wouldn't want to go lower than 50 watts RMS per channel.

My advise (which I wouldnt trust over Tony's) is to ignore RMS and compare RRSP
