I just read information about the new Matrix movie that I found interesting and thought I should pass along.

Samsung is releasing a "Matrix Phone" on May 15th (Same day as Matrix Sequel). The official site is:

That is the ugliest phone I have ever seen.

I agree that it is ugly, but I like it. I'm not giving up my T720 for it though.

What's there to like about it? I've seen toy non-realistic cell phones that looked cooler than that.

I want to know why they never marketed the phones from the first movie. You know, the one that he gets in his office as a delivery from Morpheus. The one with the sliding keypad cover. Those were cool and everyone was talking about them. Everyone I know wanted one.

On a side note, I've got a funny story. about a year ago my dad wanted new sunglasses. So he went to a local Sunglass Hut, and told one of the kids there (probably about 17 years old) that he was looking for something like the sunglasses that they wore in the Matrix. Imagine his suprise when they had no idea what he was talking about! The kid had actually never even heard of the movie, and neither did any of the other teens working there! I find that amazing. This was only about 2 and a half to 3 years after the movie was released, and they had never heard of it.

They probably wouldn't have been able to sell him MIB sunglasses either

Also the matrix game being released the same day as the move, and the phone.

You mean the Nokia 8110? They did. There was just never a version in the US.

Personally, I greatly prefer cell phones with covered buttons, and I thought that it was a good idea, as long as the slide was strong enough to take a little abuse, and not come shooting off the end of the phone too soon. Too bad I could never get one.

Wow, that is impressivly bad. You wonder who they think they're actually going to convince to buy it. The first one was cool, this is just "look, ugly furistic plastics and a motor that will break". Considering all anyone ever wanted was a phone that shipped in a fed ex envelope and a slide that covered the keypad and went ka-chunk when you answred, I can't imagine failing this bad.

It was a good phone, but had to be retired when the 8890 came out. This is still Nokia's best ID imho, but the software is getting long in the tooth (non blue).

The one in the movie has a sprung slide. The 8110 doesn't -- you have to slide it by hand. The 7110 has a sprung slide, but it's fatter than the one used in the movie.

That's what I thought. I remembered hearing that it was released in other countries. I just thought it was amazing because every person in my high school that I knew who owned a cell phone was chomping at the bit to buy one. It amazes me that the phone was never sold here. Everyone even knew it was made by Nokia. I mean, that has to be as poor advertising as you can get! You put a product in a movie, and then don't sell it to a willing market?? Astounding.

Grrrrr... I miss my sliding cover. The only nokia sliding model was the 7160. Great phone. Too bad AT&T decided to stop supporting it when the bought my provider.

Awwwww... you guys are all crazy wackos. What's wrong with a simple instrument that has a power button to turn it on, and some numbered keys so you can dial out and talk to people far away? What more do you need?

Next you'll be wanting some kind of car stereo that holds a lot of music and lets you play songs from a playlist and set up random shuffles and has a built-in equalizer and more silly stuff like that.

I tell ya, my 8-track works just fine, and is all anybody should ever need!

I dunno -- even that's excessive, IMHO. I just carry a couple quarters.

I refuse to carry a cell phone, and so far my wife has let me get away with it. I think she may pervail however when we have our first child. We'll see . . .

The US 7110 didn't have a sprung slider, you had to move it by hand... the european one had the button at the back that shot the slide down in a fraction of a second. Very matrix.

Oh. You're right. I was stuck on the 8110 and thinking that's what you were referring to.

I heard this was because Nokia US were afraid they would get sued from people hitting themselves on the chin with the sprung slide.

Don't know how true that is, but equally, I can't think of a good reason for them not to include the spring-loaded slide on the US model...
