I think I found the problem.

FWIW I'm a Comcast user myself and I haven't had this problem. But I'm 3000 miles away, and not part of the "Old AT&T" network.

The most likely cause sounds like a problem with your DNS server(s).

ya i was thinking dns, but it really throws me in a loop, becuase it goes off and on, and as of right now My mac which is on the wireless LANworks fine, but my 2 windows boxes and my linux box has nothing. (Yes i restarted the router, and yes i restarted my cable modem) Should i call the moron at comcast? ussually anytime i call them with any problems other than the obvious they have no clue what to do, and never send me to a higher tech support.

[Long shot]

I have a DLink router in my possession that does not work with Orinoco cards when WEP is enabled. It doesn't flat-out not work. It simply behaves strangely (a lot like you're describing). I had an email dicussion about it with a senior level Dlink tech and he bacically told me that I should buy non-Orinoco cards.

You mentioned that you have a wireless lan. I would try disabling WEP if the machines that are giving you problems are wireless.

Though this might not solve Justin's problem, it does solve one I had.
See, last month I bought a new laptop, with an internal 802.11b card. It's also an Orinocco card. And I can't for the life of me get it to work with my US Robotics wireless router when WEP is enabled. The thing connects, but it looses it's connection about half a minute later.
So, the problem is with the Orinocco card? Hmmm, I had my suspicions, since it doesn't comply to the WiFi standard. Guess those suspicions are now confirmed.
Thanks Rob !

I think i might have partially found the problem, Ive has the same ip address for almost 5 months now, and im not supposed to have static ip, so im curious if someone is trying to get that same ip now, for some reason my router wont grab a differnt ip no matter how hard i try, i just reflashed it and it still grabs the same one, but when i plug the cable in directly to a computer it grabs a differnt one all together. so whenever i restart myrouter i have http for about 20min or so, then http goes bye bye. FYI i have a netgear mr314 wireless router.

Your ISP's address assigner probably detects that it's the same box being plugged in and tries to give it the same IP address each time.

I don't think that's the problem.

Do you have the problem if you avoid your router?

But only for a while, right? There's something wrong with your ISP. Call support.

I would say the USR router is much more likely to be non-compliant than the Orinoco card. Those Orinoco cards have been around since the 1990s and most of the new ones I get have the Wi-Fi logo on them. I use Orinoco exclusively because I think they give the best price/performance/quality ratio.

I will try to dig up that email conversation when I get home. I think it might say it's confidential. If it does, I will just make comments about it.

The USR is WiFi certified, so I don't think that is the problem.

I can't check for the Orinocco card without opening the laptop up (which I'm not going to do for warranty purposes), but I haven't read anything in any document about it being WiFi compatible.

I hope it is though, because that would mean there's another reason why I'm not able to keep a WEP key-enabled connection going. OTOH, I have absolutely no idea what it could be then.

Well, for me, I would have to blame the D-Link router. I've personally owned wireless routers and/or access points from SMC, Linksys, Netgear, Siemens, and other D-Links. This particular one is the only one to give me trouble as far as WEP goes.

My laptop has a Mini-PCI Wi-Fi card from Orinoco that I installed. I'm not sure if the card it's supposed to come with was Orinoco, so I ordered the laptop witout the card installed just so I could be sure I was getting Orinoco.

By the way, a quote from Orinoco's site:
The ORiNOCO PC Card is interoperable with other manufacturers high-speed IEEE 802.11b compliant systems and is fully compliant with the WECA (Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance) Wi-Fi 'wireless fidelity' standard.

I bet it's the same card as in my laptop. It's also one of those mini-PCI cards.

Is your laptop an Acer by any chance? (though no doubt those cards have ended up in many a laptop series)

For now this hasn't given me any problems. I bet I'm one of the only people for miles around here that actually has wireless ethernet, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of my neighbours one day finds out that he can easily tap into my network. Needless to say, this would be a Bad Thing.
If I can't get WEP to work, I might try using MAC-address restrictions. The USR also supports this.

Dell Latitude X200

EDIT: This laptop is also sold as the Gateway 200 series and the Samsung Q10 (Samsung is the OEM).

Dell Latitude X200

Nice machine!
Your data and a bit of reading around on the web has shown me that I was right in my thinking : the Orinocco line of cards has been implemented in MANY differend brands of laptops. They're practically a standard of their own.

As to why I can't seem to establish and keep a connection using WEP, I'm totally puzzled now...

Are you using WEP for security reasons? And you get connectivity issues when using WEP?

Then disable it. WEP offers negligible security - attacks against it are trivial (and automated.) MAC address ACL's are also pretty trivial to defeat with a card which allows you to configure MAC address (most do these days.)

Go for something like IPSec or Kerberos (in fact Symbol 802.11 has Kerberos integrated - kewl) or newer kit with TKIP and TLS.
