Searching through old posts, I only found 1 alternate conifguration setup for the Sony Stalk through Hijack's ir_translate function. What sort of configurations is everyone else using that is using the Stalk? The standard control setup doesn't seem very functional to me since it won't skip tracks (Or maybe I just dont know how to do it) so I'm looking for some sort of alternate configuration.

Interesting. I'd think that would be one of the most basic features of the thing. I don't have one myself, so I can't check, but I can't imagine that they'd leave it out of the stalk command set.

I know the stalk has bits that "twist", not just buttons, and I know it has something akin to a "shift" function, where you hold down the shift key and then all the buttons work differently. Maybe it's one of those things that's requred to make that work?

The details on the interface found here seem to indicate that track+/- is part of the command set, so I'm sure it's do-able somehow.

Also... What version of the software are you running?

Next / previous track works fine in my stalk.

my SW version 2b13, with Hijack, with no IR translation.

I'm running 2.0. When I turn the small knob, it adjusts the volume. When I turn the larger knob, it seeks fwd/reverse through the track. The middle button in the back doesnt do anything and the two buttons in the rear act like up and down arrows. The two side buttons do shuffle and something else I forget. I can't tell that shift does much of anything except shuffle through the visuals.

Maybe Im missing something?

Wait, didn't someone once say that the larger "ring" slides up and down for different functions? Or am I thinking of a different stalk unit?

Sounds kind of weird setup you have there.

Lets clarify some terminology though.

The large ring that you turn for skip forward/back, is spring loaded or should be, if you "twist" it forward, then release it quickly, it goes 1 track forward, if you twist and hold it, it will skip forward until you release it.

Like Volume does - i.e. if you twist and hold the volume knob it ramps up or down the volume, twist it then release it move the volume up or down by one "click" like the knob does on the front panel.

The other knobs change their function dependiing on whether you configued the stalk on the left or right hand side of the steering wheel [see the stalk option in Emplode for this].

The one that is closest to the dashboard i.e. either the rounded button or the "sunken in button" turns the Empeg off if you press and hold it, if you touch it briefly it pauses playback.

The others: 1 brings up the Menu, one acts like the Cancel buttons does and the other one works like shuffle on/off.

The "button" on the end of the stalk should change source from Player to Aux then to AM Tuner [if fitted], then FM tuner.

Shift track Forward/Back will select next/previous visual [even when visuals are not on screen].

Mine operates as you described except whenever you touch the jog knob (large ring), my player goes into FFW/RWD immediatley. Even a quick twist puts it in FFW/RWD mode, which may explain why Ive had to resort to Hijack configs to get it work correctly.

Can you verify that the horizontal rectangle button on the back (Assuming right side mount) doesn't do anything?

Maybe I have a bad stalk.

will test it in my car on the way home in about 10 minutes and let you know.
From memory that supposed to toggle shuffle on/off - which only shows on the display briefly as I recall so it can look like it does nothing when it does.

That was my experience. It also has no release code on my stalk (checked with hijack).

I have it mapped to a long 'down' press when in menu mode, so as to jump up the playlist (ver2 feature IIRC).

rectangle button [should be shuffle mode toggle] doesn't work for me now either.

It broke sometime during the 2.0Betas - perhaps B13, because it USED to work about 6-9 months back.

Where were you last week when we were soliciting for "last call" bugs on 2.0?

I think this is a HiJack bug as the Hijack "Button codes display" for that particular button returns 80FFFFFFFF [or 80 followed by all 'FF's for as many as needed].
No matter whether the button is released or pressed.
Other buttons work fine and return press and release codes.
So, I suspect that Marks Kernel doesn't map it over.
[it used to].
I'm not running the latest Hijack though - I think I'm a low 300's version though.

I will upgrade to 2.0 Final soon and then retest.

Mmm definitely a Hijack bug. Ooops.. missing a line in the stalk definitions in hijack.c. I'll put out a v325 shortly with it fixed.

Okay, Hijack v325 is out.

The only change is a one-liner to fix (?) the stalk functionality. Let me know whether this helps or not, by posting followups here.

Thanks.

I'm going "off the air" now for a few hours, while I reconfigure my notebook to install a larger win98 partition (for PhotoShop), and Mandrake-9.1 (awesome!) for everything else.

Cheers

Mandrake-9.1

And I was all set to put Mandrake 9.0 on my machine tonight, looks like I am staying here for a while longer while the ISO images download

> Mandrake-9.1

Definitely worth the download. My previous install was RedHat-8.0 (ugh!), and I really cannot wait to wipe it from my main laptop. I put MDK91 on the older 366Mhz notebook yesterday, and was amazed at the new lease on life it received.

Cheers

With Version 2.00 and Hijack v325 full stalk functionality has returned. Thank you Mark!!! ... now I can again "Mark" songs for attention with a single stalk button. In case anyone is interested, here are my current mappings:

Hmm, a Linux distro with a name like that and with a recommendation like that from "The Lord" makes me think I had better take a closer look...

I have been running Mandrake9.0 on both my file server, and a laptop (P166MMX) for about 6 months now, and both machines are very usable, I must admit the laptop struggles a bit in the GUI's but if I run it in 'console' mode it is just fine.

9.1 is now downloaded, all I need to do now is burn the CDs and install them on my main machine, so that looks like it could be another job for the weekend

Okay, now I'm bummed out. They've done something weird with the sound configuration, and I cannot get the cs46xx driver to work in my IBM A21p notebook. The driver claims to be the exact same version as that on the KNOPPIX cd-rom (totally excellent, by the way!), but it works in KNOPPIX and not in Mandrake-9.1.

Mm...

Oh, nevermind.. Use the Source, Luke.. Found a magic "thinkpad=1" option for the snd-cs46xx driver. Works peachy now.

And the original cs46xx driver was failing cuz it was compiled with some newfangled "NEW_DSP" option, so it wasn't really the same as the one in KNOPPIX (which worked).

But all's well with the snd-cs46xx version of the driver.

Now to figure out why all of the vid players miscalculate the pixel counts on this notebook -- did it under RH80 and KNOPPIX as well. Must be a bug in the Rage128 mobility driver. Maybe I'll try direct framebuffer instead..

Well I was going to say that it sucks that it didn't work, but I should have guessed you would have fixed it already

Hopefully once I get my main machine back up and running I can get that USB stuff finished and out there.

Okay, the Vidix subdriver in Xine seems to have cured the video issues.. watching the "Back in the USA" DVD right now.
