Well, assuming Hugo's there to do the primary inspection of the first units off the line, throw in two weeks to finish the production, four to five for ocean shipment to California, a few more to fill the distribution channels, it looks like we're at the end of September at least.

Enjoying the afternoon rain?
Are you in/near KL? If so, and you get some free time, here's some places you may enjoy;
Hard Rock Cafe. It's likely to be the cheapest HRC you ever go to.
KL Tower - Great views. The Petronas Towers usually have a long line, and you can't go to the top anyway - only as far as the bridge.
Baku Caves. About 20 minutes by dirt cheap cab North of KL, huge cave in a big rock with a temple in the middle. Lots of steps to climb, so best in the morning before the humidity gets too oppressive. Lots of roaming monkeys.
China Town. Has to be seen to be believed. Cheap knock-offs are everywhere.

Anyway, just an update on coming competition since this thread is basically a general portable player thread. I am not trying to promote anything, but Toshiba (Japan) is right now having one of those mysterious websites that'll be updated every so often with new info. of a new HDD player. Click here! They say it'll be less than 13 mm in height (I assume depth), so that it will actually be thinner than the new iPod. That is pretty impressive. The other numbers will be revealed by the dates shown there.
I just hope 500 doesn't mean something dumb like 500 folders max haha. Anyway, I know most of you will still trust the Empeg team with innovation in the Rio products, and I do not plan to try to convince you otherwise. I am just showing you what's coming soon too. Toshiba, nevertheless, released a crappy HDD player before, and history might repeat itself. At least it'll be thin.

I'm actually in Penang, yes. I don't think I'll be getting much time for sightseeing though, but thanks for the suggestions genixia.
13mm is pretty darn slim, and only really achievable if you use the toshiba drives (which we don't). 500=500 minutes playtime (8 and a bit hours, like the iPod?) possibly. 10 is obviously 10GB.

Hmm that could be a possibility.
I think I read somewhere that the iPod's battery life is pretty short because they had to use a small battery to get it to a slimmer size. That may apply to the Toshiba model as well.
The iHP-100 uses a Lithium-Polymer battery and they rate the battery life at 16 hours, but at the cost of thickness.

That sounds reasonable. I doubt that they've pulled off a technological coup and that it's really 500GB and 10hours. They obviously haven't decided on the price yet. "?"
I've heard that the beaches are nice in Penang - I unfortunately didn't get a chance to find out for myself, but some of my friends assure me that they are certainly better than the average UK beach.

My main problem is, even with a 40, deciding what stuff to load on it. The playlist I normally keep randomized for short trips is about 10GB, so that is easy. But what else to select...

What I do with my 10Gig iPod is have two smart playlists. One of these selects 2Gigs of my most recently added music. The other selects 7Gigs of my most often played music. Both are automatically synced to the iPod whenever I plug it in. The spare gig (600Megs actually) is used for spur of the moment stuff I decide I want to listen to and file taxi purposes. Although this isn't as good as having everything I own always available it does a great job of keeping me from ever having to worry about what to put on the iPod.
From Roger's comment it sounds like their Music Manager tool will allow you to do something similar.

True, but my collection has outpaced my local hard drive space. It looks like I will have to upgrade my PC's hard drive to keep everything local for RMM2 to do its job! As long as that 40GB sync is pretty quick...

Nah, not really. Just that my hard drive is older, it is a small Shuttle case, I really don't want to upgrade, and my music partition is too small for all the data. I still have about 20GB to kick around, so I should be okay for a little while on the player.

I think that one is Cali. Chiba is the axe blade-looking one. I can't rember the name of the MuVo-style one. 'Flashy' maybe?

Oh, and there seems to be a ton of them coming. Chiba, Fuse, Nitrus, Cali, and Eigen. Chiba is 128 MB/256 MB, Fuse is in 128 MB, Nitrus and Eigen are 1.5 GB models, and the Cali seems to be a sport model available in 128 MB/256 MB. A site concerning the Nitrus/Eigen
Wow I find it really cool that they are releasing their whole new line of digital audio players at once. It's like a bomb.
