Slashdot is running
an article featuring quotes from the president of my Alma Mater (Penn State University) who has brought up the idea of universities licensing songs and then providing them as downloads to university students (for a fee, of course.) It's an interesting idea. Since we all know college campuses have all the ingredients for mass copyright violations (super fast connection, a hunger for new music, and a lack of expendable cash not devoted to beer) I think it's an interesting concept.

here's a transcript of the interview, which goes into more detail. Interesting idea... Kinda blurs the line between education and business, but that's not always a bad thing, either. Besides, I've seen some of the raw data on bandwidth use at PSU, and they have a point when they talk about students sucking up ridiculous amounts of bandwidth for file sharing. Why not turn an overhead into a revenue stream?
