If you're not afraid to open up the case, there is a 12v header on the main board. Two pins at the back are BOTH 12v, connecting a fan to them will do nothing but connecting it to one and the chassis will make it spin. Amazing but true.

I put a small fan in mine and found it cooled things really well but was too noisy and not having the electronics will to put in a thermostat or resistor to turn it down a bit, took it out.

are you getting a lot of overheating?

For anyone interested, there's a pretty nice and detailed thermistor-based fan project available in kit form, linked from the FAQ.

In fact, I'm considering doing that very project myself after buying a really quiet and low profile 40mm fan. The fans in my docking stations work, but I've got no cooling in the car and sometimes it gets pretty hot. Is there a consensus as to what the quietest low profile 40mm fan is?

The fans you have listed on the faq are perfect - the quietest of the lot is just that... quiet!

I have been looking for one for my shuttle psu. Here is the quietest one I can find. I got two of the NMB 80mm fans from this person last week and they are very quiet. I didn't see the 40mm ones until after I already got my 80's DOH! .

They only charged a few dollars for shipping and I got my order in a few days.

My empeg gets really hot if I go on a long drive because it is mounted above another head unit with a built in amp. I need to swap them I think.

BTW: How hot is too hot? Is 55°C the max as described in the FAQ? My Empeg is in default-configuration for alarming me when it's too hot. Is this defaultvalue set up very low or do I need a fan when I hear these alarms frequently when it's very hot in the car?

Rolf

In my black jeep down in North Carolina the empeg almost always gets too hot when driving around for more than 30 minutes in the summer. A fan is a must - and I've got it turned down too low.

I have a 96 Integra and before that a 90 CRX and both using a Kenwood Head Unit. In the CRX which was an OVEN in the interior with it being black and all that glass, and even with taking the Empeg in and out of the car for work, anything more than about 30 minutes and I'd be tripping the alarm. So I atttached a fan and this helped... but not much. So when I got the Integra, I had to mount the Empeg ABOVE the head unit and on the CRX it was below. I thought this would improve airflow but the same problem returned. Well... I am a Mechanical engineer and have access to a laser, so I had them cut me two fan cutouts to the left and right of the middle fan and centered in the plate. I then bought a hard drive cooler set up that is supposed to mount to a 5.25" hard drive and it has 2 BIG fans and a heat sink... well, with a little maneuvering, this will go in there across both hard drives and the cover closes. It is loud, yes, but it doesn't bother me. At work, it dropped the temperature about 23F and actually is more efficient than the open air setup (I did some tests). In the car, the warmest I've gotten is 47C and that was on a near 90F degree day with no AC on and an hour drive.... but it hit that temp quickly and stayed there. This is just my solution... I've got 80GB with like 19,000 songs on it and I do not use the radio because it's horrible around here so I had to have a solution that kept me with music all the time no matter what weather

Update...

Fan arrived , looks like a fan ,blows lots of air , makes no noise .

The fan is very silent to the point i have to keep checking it is on.

Fitting : The fans motherboard header was a 2pin header but was too high to fit in the empeg, chopped it off and soldered one off another fan on.
Trapped the negative wire between the case and hard disk carrier.

I can't say how cool my empeg is now as my temp sensor don't work but it used to be too hot to touch after an hour, now its actualy cold.

Buy one is what i'll say.

Even when it's installed in the player, with the air turbulence at the holes?

What was this fan's thickness? Is it 10mm thick or 6mm thick?

Did you need any electronics between the fan and the power supply, or are you running it full voltage 100 percent of the time?
