Sigh... but there is no real indication of scale on those pictures. For all I can tell, they are close-ups of 50cc Honda motorcycle parts.

Did you actually look at the pictures in the .pdf? That stuff is effing enormous! I can't even get our foundry to pour aluminum that holds oil, and that's 15 lbs worth. Some of those castings must weight 10's of tons. Wow.

Zeke's right! Check out page 18 on the PDF of that second link. In that illustration you can see the tiny little ladders on that monstrosity!

Looking at the output specs on p.22 - 8 cylinder at 105 rpm 23120 bhp! That's 1,156,440 ft-lbs of torque! All that from a measly 418 TON engine. Damn.

So, what exactly would an engine of that size be used for?

The grand daddy is one page 23 14 clyinders 108920 Bhp and torque i have no idea from a 2300 ton engine

What they are used for is for propelling the latest in superhuge container ships which are getting to about the same size as an largish sky scraper lying on their sides but about to do about 30mph for the faster ones

The latest nutty concet is for a ship using possible two of those monsters to propell it's self

Hmmm, let's see.

It travels at 26.2 knots, burning 228 tons of fuel per day. That would be 629 nautical miles per day on 456,000 pounds of fuel.

Probably running heavy diesel fuel, say 7 pounds per gallon, so that's 629 miles on 65,143 gallons, or .0096 miles per gallon.

Are you telling me that thing only gets 59 feet per gallon of fuel?* And to think people complain about the fuel mileage of SUVs...

tanstaafl.

edited to convert from statute miles to nautical miles!

But SUVs can't carry containerloads of Hello Kitty Talking Keyrings.
