I have recieved an offer to donate a PocketPC so I could develop Palantir on the WinCE platform. I would like to make sure that it would be a worthwhile effort before I proceed with the work involved. If I write it for the WinCE platform, I'll do my best to write it in Java so it would be portable to the Zaurus, and possibly back-ported to the Palm. I'd also like to get a feel of how many people are currently using Palantir/Empire. So, here goes:

Do you currently use Palantir?
Yes
No
WTF is Palantir?

Thank you for participating in this poll. Please return all pencils to the front of the room, and exit to your right. If you have any questions about Palantir itself, please visit my website (linked in my sig).

Mark,

I really enjoy using Palantir. However, the majority of the apps that I use are only available for PocketPC. And carrying two PDAs; is just too geeky.

Maybe we can have that option added to the geek test for higher geek points??

I have a Casio E-100 PPC that isn't doing a whole heck of a lot for me right now, and Palantir might be a neat use for it. The problem is it runs an older WinCE version (2.1 maybe?) and I dunno if its 16 MB of RAM would handle a JVM very well. I don't even know if a JVM exists for it. But I would certainly have some interest in it if it could be worked... I don't have any plans to buy a new PocketPC though.

The app I would develop would run on your system. My target would be even low-powered machines, you wouldn't have to have the latest iPAQ to run Palantir. It really isn't that complex of a program, and there are very light JVM's that would run within 16M.

A few people have checked the "WTF is Palantir" option in the poll. Quick answer: It's a Palm device based playlist creator for the Empeg. This means you can create a playlist of songs you have on your Empeg on the Palm device, sort the playlist around, then beam the playlist to the Empeg using the IrDA port. The Empeg will insert/replace/append the songs you selected on the Palm device.

It's written to be easy enough for a passenger to use in the car, when someone asks you "So what all do you have on that thing, anyway?"

The website is here: http://cushman.net/projects/palantir/

I can't wait to get my hands on Palantir. I just need time to figure out the software and a cheap old Palm from EBay. It would be so great for people to be able to make their own playlists while I drive.

unfortunately, I use that betamax of the palmtop world, the Psion Series5.
Soon I will have to crack to buy a Compaq/HP to run Linux on.
I am not a big fan of the "we can make windows run on your fridge" hype from microsoft.

You could always get a Zaurus. Anyone know how healthy they are these days?

I pull my hat. Thanks for asking. Maybe you can program this, hopefully in JAVA, so that I can learn something about Palantir and programming JAVA on CE.
