Unfortunately it's just a concept car.
I saw one on the A2 in New Cross yesterday. It wasn't going very quickly, but that's the A2 in New Cross for you...

This is just to improve your German language skills...
It may not improve my German translation skills, but it is improving my google translating speed. Even if google doesn't always give the best possible translation:

na klar, auf schnelle, auergewhnliche Autos achte ich immer.
"well clearly, on fast, auergewhnliche cars respected I always."

auergewhnliche

Don't know if you lost the german double-s "ß" and the o-diaeresis "ö" before or after translation (if before I have some understanding for google not finding a translation)

Anyway: the word is "unusual" (which you may have guessed from the context)

My browsers (or more likely, my browsers' default font settings) are not rendering those letters at all, so I guess I can't blame google for not translating them. I'll have to look into a font that will render them properly.

This was surely the regular Smart Roadster.

I was referring to the V6 twin turbo Roadster as being a concept car. They built just six of those.

Almost

What I wrote actually means:

Of course, I always pay attention to fast and unusual cars.

Indeed. I'm suspicious that this bbs doesn't support extended character sets. I checked my browser, and it definately supports non-us vowels (I haven't checked the double-s, though).

What ever became of Rechtschreibreform? We have an office in Stuttgart, and I was so hopeful it would make my life easier.

I was able to see Mike Tempsch's and Peter's german characters just fine:

Now I'm really puzzled. I go to other sites, and have no problem. But here, I haven't seen any. Odd.

I'm using NS 4.7 and IE6 on XP Pro on my laptop, neither of which would show those characters on this BBS. But I saw them fine in IE6 when I reverse translated those words on google.

I just logged in from my work machine (I do make at least a passing effort to keep my work and personal computers separate. ), which is also XP with IE6, and it does show the characters there.

Anyone have any idea why my laptop won't show higher characters on this bbs, but has no problem with them on google and other sites?

thanks,

What's your default encoding set to? These BBS pages don't appear to contain an encoding tag (despite most people treating them as 8859-1) and so your browser's default will be used. Google and other pages will probably specifically set an encoding.

Locale-specific encodings are rubbish, anyway. Unicode Is The One True Encoding, And UTF-8 Is His Prophet.

Hmm, I wonder if I can set my default encoding to UTF-8, then stick loads of UTF-8 in my posts and have it work? That would be well cool.

I just forced my IE6 to Unicode (UTF-8) to no avail.

Well, I guess my productivity will be shot to hell today.

thanks (and my very first reply from someone with a blue name! ),

Try forcing it to 8859-1.

On a related topic, I sent Drakino a patch to enable HTML character entities, and I don't know if he still hasn't gotten a chance to try it or if it failed utterly. I feel like a horrible nag pestering him about it, though.

That doesn't seem to be an option in my IE.

OK, this is a test of alt-0223: "ß"
Which just showed up in the edit window as a proper double S character.

But which just changed into a tilde'd A and an umlaut'ed Y when I pressed the continue button.

edit: and remained as the A and Y when posted.

edit2: but if I "view source," it shows up as a proper double S character.

If I change my encoding to UTF-8, I get the eszett (?). Otherwise, I get the `A' and `Y'. Maybe IE shows 8859-1 as Western European or something.

Curiouser and curiouser. I re-forced it to unicode, and now my post's double-s "ß" is showing up, but Dr_DOS's and subsequent posts still don't show any of the high characters, regardless of the encoding selected.

The thing is that you are not only viewing in UTF8, you posted in UTF8. So, except for those browsing in UTF8, it's gonna show up as the `A' and `Y'. As for why you can't view those previously posted characters I don't know. The copy of IE 5.5 I've got easy access to works correctly in this respect.

I thought UTF8 was a superset of the basic western Latin set. I guess I've got some catching up to do. Sigh.

I still just don't get why I can't get the characters to show on other people's postings.

Thanks for your help.
