Before I spend a bunch of time getting the cross-toolchain running (though I'll have to eventually anyway), I don't suppose anyone has a ttyd binary for the empeg?

I've found that you can often get binaries compiled for the ARM platform from ftp://ftp.debian.org/ out of the potato branch, located here: ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-arm, or at IpkgFind: http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/. Unfortunately, ttyd is only in the unstable branch of Debian, so you'll have to compile that yourself.
