I think it's unfortunate that there is control by the industry over how we use these things, but it doesn't concern me personally, or at least this particular instance doesn't.
Even if I owned a ReplayTV, I wouldn't use the commercial skip feature. If I miss a piece of an episode or catch the end of a break, either way I'm going to be upset. But even more so, the Tivo representative was right, I often go back and watch a commercial I'm interested in, but it doesn't interrupt my viewing too much. Spending 4 to 6 seconds every 10 minutes or so doesn't bother me.
Does ReplayTV have the jump-back feature during fast forwarding that Tivo does?

hmmm...don't know...what does "jump-back" do? We have "instant replay" but that's not contingent upon whether your using fast forward or not. We also have "quick skip" which advances 30seconds instantaneously. I don't use fast forward very often at all.

Tivo also has the instant replay, but this is different. I'm talking about when you're fast-forwarding, and you press play (or whatever) to start playback again. Does it automatically jump back a bit in the video? On Tivo it jumps back a different amount based on how fast you were fast-forwarding.

I think he means where a recorded show is say an hour long. There are 4 15 minute partions (TiVo breaks all recordings into 15 minute partitions on the time bar.) You can hit FF or REW then hit the skip button and will immediately go to (or "jump-back to" ) the next bar instead of waiting for the FF or REW to get to that point. It's good for skipping through movies or other long shows to get near a point in the recording. At least mine works that way (DirecTiVo) but I enable the 30 second skip backdoor on mine. I'm not sure if that changes the function of the jump back feature

Gotcha, sounds like a cool feature but the Replay remembers where you left off in a movie (and maybe Tivo does too) so if my kid is watching "Rugrats go to bumf*&K Egypt" and he falls asleep on the sofa I can switch on "Tech TV" and the next day the kid can finish the movie.
-or-
When watching any show, you can enter a number and then jump to skip to an exact point in the recording. This is best described with some examples:
30 Jump - Jumps 30 minutes into the recording (30 minutes)
90 Jump - Jumps an hour and a half into the recording (90 minutes)
100 Jump - Jump an hour into the recording (think 1:00)
130 Jump - Also jumps an hour and a half into the recording (1:30)
180 Jump - Jumps 2 hours and 20 minutes into the recording (1 hour and 80 minutes)
All jumps are done as absolute from the beginning. You can jump relative to your current location by entering the number and pressing QuickSkip or Instant Replay:
2 QuickSkip - Jump ahead 2 minutes
1 Instant Replay - Jump backward 1 minute

Yeah, Tivo saves position too.
Ew, I don't like how those numbers work, but the feature is nice. I rarely have a program longer than 60 minutes anyway.
*edit*
but like I said, that wasn't what I was talking about I like that feature too, though.

COOL, I didnt know about the "jump" from beginning. I always use the minutes+quickskip. I had always used 99+quickskip to get the beginning or end. Then jumped again from there, but your way is much quicker.
I don’t think I would like the TIVO play button to skip anywhere. On replay the play button toggles between slowmo and regular speed. I find that my ADD causes me too hit this by accident when the REPLAYTV doesnt respond in .1 seconds.

It would seem to me that if advertisement skipping became a standard feature on DVR devices that we would see an increase of the far more annoying 'banner' advertising superimposed on top of the content. I for one, find this much, much more annoying and am quite happy to see automatic commercial skip go by the wayside if it means that banners stay relatively rare. I think that fast forwarding commercials isn't a bad compromise. I think that eventually advertisers will realize that users have to watch while fast forwarding as opposed to getting up, flipping the channel or other less 'productive' (from the advertiser's point of view) action.

There was a study done that claimed that people who FF'd through commercials on their TiVos recalled about the same amount of information as those who watched them. Probably because you have to be more intent when FFing.

I don’t think I would like the TIVO play button to skip anywhere. The only time the TiVo play button ``skips'' is when you're FFing at one of the two (of three) upper levels. Then, when you hit play, it jumps back a few seconds.
This is designed so that you can FF through commercials, wait to see your show, then hit play. Obviously, if you're seeing your show, it's already back from commercial, so without that, you'd have to back up a ways. (I guess that's what ReplayTV folks do.) It takes a little practice, but oftentimes, you can hit the commercial-show interstice dead-on.

I love the feature. I can understand that some people might not, so yes, there should be an option to turn it off, but I think it's great.

The jump back feature is a neat idea, except it is configured for someone with the reactions of a drunk - possibly dead - sloth. Sure, it makes a neat game to get the timing just right, but it gets a bit boring after the first few hundred times.

Sky+ could do with some sort of jump back feature, I am hopeless at catching the end of the ads.
Edit: Actually, come to think of it that wouldn't help at all. For the simple jump back to be useful I would have to be consistently hopeless at missing the end of the ads by the same amount each time. Which I'm not

it is configured for someone with the reactions of a drunk - possibly dead - sloth. Like my wife, and many other people in the the US, I bet. (It may explain why no one here can drive.)
I wish that was configurable, but it's not, so I just wait a hair longer than I normally would.

Enter-Enter codes
-----------------
E-E stands for "Enter Enter". The following codes must be entered in the "Browse
By Name"screen. These codes are generally used to set values on the Tivo. You
enter the code, and the prompt will appear, along with the red recording light
coming on. You then enter the value. You then enter the code again to set the
value in, and the recording light will go off. It doesn't actually stop recording if you
happen to be recording something, however. Entering invalid values will cause your
Tivo to reboot, so be careful.
...
``E-E-Rewind - Lets you set the "Offset:". Defaults to 2000.
``E-E-FastForward - Lets you set the "Delay:". Defaults to 957.
``The Offset and Delay control the overshoot correction. When you set them, go to
any recorded program, play it, pause it, and press FF to do a frame advance. This
makes the new values you put in take effect. For 1.3 like correction, use Offset of
1000 and Delay of 750.

Whoa... I had no idea Tivo was that configurable.
Is there any way to change the way the "Start Recording" and "End Recording" parameters work?
Right now, I can tell it to start recording a program 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes etc. early; and I can tell it to stop recording a program 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes etc. later than the normal end time. Is there a way I can tell it to start recording the program later than normal start time, and stop recording the program earlier than the normal start time?
Believe it or not, due to the incredibly unprofessional and amateurish television operators here in Alaska, I need to be able to do this because typically by 10 at night the local stations will be running anywhere from two to 15 minutes late. That is, programs that are supposed to start at 10 pm will actually start at 10:08 or something like that. This means I have to stop recording at 11:10, and if I want to pick up a program on another station that was supposed to start at 11 pm, but will really start at about 11:10... well, you get the idea.

I'm pretty sure that I remember that this is configurable, but you have to have a network interface on your TiVo to do it. I can't find the docs right now, but it seems like you can't add more options, but you can change the options that exist. And you can't get it to start late, but you can get it to start a negative number of minutes early, which is the same thing.
Unfortunately, I can't find that documentation now.

Yeah, Tivoweb offers an incredible amount of options for you to configure. You can even adjust the recording resolutions to one of about 5 presets. This was helpful when I was trying to do video extraction and wanted the videos to already be in DVD-ready format.

I knew this existed, but for the life of me I just couldn't find it again on the Net. Then, tonight, I ran across the file on one of my hard drives. I know this worked for me, I even changed some of the values for longer/shorter times, but I'm not sure what version(s) of the software it works with, and like I said, it's pretty much impossible to find anything about it on the Net. Anyway, use at your own risk...
