I wanted to install an additional hard drive into my empeg, but I need to find a jumper for it....Does anyone have one out there you'd be willing to sell me? Otherwise, does anyone know where I can buy one?

From the Drive Upgrade Guide...
According to Hugo, the correct jumpers are sold by Farnell, part numbers 510920 (blue), 510932 (black) and 510944 (red). For the US, the Jameco part number is reportedly 119263.

Is there any other place to get them (like a store?) $6.00 (after buying the min. of 10 + shipping) seems like a lot for something that would normally cost 15 cents....

Is there some kind of hardware help-desk type place around, like maybe where you work? I was able to just grab one from one of our support guys.

I was recently laid off (which I will post about later), but it was a restaurant so they don't have that sort of thing at all.......

I guess not. Was worth a shot though. I also realized after my post that this size jumper may not be in a lot of support centers anyway. Ours happens to support a large number of laptops.

Unfortunately I don't know of a better way than simply ordering from the links Tony referenced. I was about to resort to that before I though of talking with our local guys here.

Best Buy has them in little packets, I think. Otherwise, try your local computer shop and ask them to buy a couple. Chances are they'll give 'em to you.

Or if you're a bit more, err, "relaxed" about the right & wrong ways of doing things, you can just bend the two pins slightly so they're touching and put a small blob of solder on to join them. Has been working perfectly on mine for about six months now :-)

Sounds like a good idea now, but i would not do that because you might want to use the drive for something else down the road... say you get a new 100 gig drive, and you want to use your old 60gig as a "slave" ... well, you wont be able to use them together like that! Your soldered drive will be "stuck" as a "single" or "slave" or whatever the jumper settings is that you soldered.

not a good idea IMHO.

You can desolder something almost as easily as you can solder something...

True, but in this case, you have the problem of the bent pins, and the solder residue might make it hard to slide a jumper on in the future, but i guess if you de-solder it, you wouldn't need the jumper. oh, who knows... you "could" do it in a pinch.

Heh, with the way those jumpers tend to fall off, I would think a little extra force would do it some good.

Well, it works, and as Tony says it's a trivial job to de-solder it should you want to use it as a master somewhere else. The only real issue I can think of is if your soldering wasn't too good and you put a *huge* messy blob on there instead of making a neat little join. If that blob later fell off and started sliding around inside the machine I guess it could cause problems. I didn't do that so I'm not worrying :-)

why do you want a jumper for your Empeg Hard Drive? is it getting really cold, or are you just worried about how it will survive the winter? maybe just turn the heater up in your car?

LOL, I'm picturing someone knitting little empeg-sized sweaters and booties.
