So how does the battery charging work for the karma. Can I just leave it connected to the charger without fear of cooking the battery. Also are there any problems with letting the battery go totally dead.
With the riot if I didn't use it for a while and the battery discharged I would have to go through a battery calibration procedure. I tried just leaving it plugged in all the time but now I think the battery got fried.

Those things have specifically been tested and worked on in beta, I don't think a retail customer would have the kinds of problems you're worried about.
The battery has a thermal sensor so you shouldn't be able to cook it even if you try. And the player will shut itself down before the battery goes totally dead. But even if you do manage to make the battery totally dead (there's a way to do it if you really try, but I won't tell you how  ) we specifically tested to make sure it would still charge from that state.

As soon as AC is connected, the battery is disconnected from the player and just connected to the charger. The charger will then determine if the cell needs charging, and do so if necessary, whilst the player runs directly from the AC adaptor.
Leaving the unit connected to AC (eg, docked) does not affect the battery at all.

I can't remember if this has been addressed before: Can the Karma battery be replaced if it no longer takes a complete charge, or if completely dies (for whatever reason)?

It's a custom cell and you'd need to open the unit - so the answer is "not easily". That doesn't mean that it's impossible though (the iPod is in the same situation, but someone started making 3rd party cells for it)

Sounds like going in the empeg! It's a bit harder than that. Knowing what to remove in what order takes a bit of knowledge. And getting it back together again is somewhat fiddly. (I always make the mistake of putting one certain screw into place before I'm supposed to, then having to remove it again...) And the wires to the battery are soldered in place. So it's not quite as easy as replacing an empeg hard disk.
I'm curious how long those cells are expected to last under normal use...

If looked after, modern batteries will last years. I really wouldn't worry about it. My Sharp Minidisc player still plays for the same number of hours as the day I bought it 3 years ago.

How's yours holding up? Notice any changes in playing time? I've never even had a chance to stress the full playing time of the battery, actually. At least not since they've optimized all of the power-saving code.
I will say that when I do use it, the charge meter seems to decrease predictably, and it does seem to charge up correctly when I dock it.

We all have specific testing goals. We have been looking specifically for anything that would change or glitch sound quality and the "total user experience". The battery life is dependent on encoding, disk and back light usage. Your mileage WILL vary.
For what its worth, I consistantly charge the battery and drain it under random shuffles with VBR MP3s, no backlighting. It will easily last for day or two (constant play).

Karma has an entirely different battery strategy to the Riot. In fact we made a point of checking how the Riot worked and then doing the opposite.

Very old. I'm still bitter (can't you tell) about telling Kelly, who was and is incredibly tight on money, that that was a good purchase at the time. Roll the dice i guess eh?

Thread hijack... sorry guys...
nope. It's taken forever just to get all the components i really want (especially on the budget i've set for myself.) By taking a couple of months to get it together, i've gotten almost everything at half price or close too it, so i've saved myself a ton. Not to mention a complete rethink of the whole setup. I'll post details in the install forum soon. =]
