Has anyone who has this program been able to figure out how to just install the anti-virus off of the CD. I don't want the rest of the crap, just the anti-virus software and I don't want to have to fork out another $40 for it.

I think I managed this about a year ago by installing eveything, then manually turning bits off by selecting the "do not start automatically when I switch on my PC" option.

I did that with the stupid resource thing, and the content filter. As I recall, many of the options were well hidden!

You could do a lot worse than run AVG on your machine instead. The free edition is great - I use it at home and at work. www.grisoft.com

I've turned off portions as well but I don't want to install all of the programs. This morning it was deleting all of my incoming email and then it said it had a problem and to remove and re-install it before it quit working, I just don't trust it anymore.

Interesting that you bring up AVG. I just now downloaded it and tried it out yesterday. I'm very impressed with its one-size-fits-all installation (same program installed on 2000 and 98se), its user interface (the automatic updates screen is super-clear and understandable), and its overall simplicity. Very nice. We'll see if it does OK in the long run.

I've never seen those results before. In its defence, AVG has often caught viruses that Norton hasn't picked up on. It'll be interesting to see if the new version AVG fares any better.

I wish those failed tests showed what viruses they didn't catch. If it was like, one rare obscure boot-sector-only virus, then I really couldn't care less. I never get boot sector viruses because I don't ever boot from floppy disks. I've even disabled the boot sector scanning on my 98se machine because I want the computer to boot faster and I don't like waiting for its at-boot scanner loading up.

I've been running AVG on my system for about a year now, and haven't had a virus in that time (*knock knock*). Of course, it's hard to say that it's because of the software, and might just be my online behaviour, but I do know it's caught a few since I've had it installed.

All I know is that Norton and McAfee wish they made programs that were as clean and easy to run as AVG. Norton is practically adware, and I've never gotten a clean uninstall from them.

And it's just hard to turn down a free program like that.

The good thing is that Norton antivirus and AVG run quite happily alongside each other. Your right about Norton... it bogs down systems something dreadful - I stick to its antivirus only. Never again will I use its security package - made my 2.4Ghz system about as fast a fish in concrete.

I downloaded it and will give it a try. I liked Norton anti-virus much better than McAfee but hated the Internet Security crap.

It's taking my Win98SE machine 5 minutes to boot even after un-installing the software. Time to reload Windows I guess.

Pardon my ignorance, but why don't you just buy Norton Anti Virus, instead of the whole internet Security bundle? That's what I did and I'm very happy with it. Can't you purchase it seperately ?

Yes, but after spending $70 on the bundle, I don't feel like going out and spending more, especially when it's already on that CD. They should let you load what you want to use of the bundle, but they don't, yes you can turn off features, or install everything but the anti-virus software, but you can't just install the anti-virus feature.

Can't you install everything, then Uninstall NIS? They show up seperately in the Add/Remove programs list.

I did like NIS for blocking banner and popup ads. Anyone know of a free service like that?

Also try looking on that CD for a directory called NAV, and running the setup in there...I think that'll just install the anti-virus.

I found the NAV file located in the NIS folder and after two attempts at an unsuccessful install, I'll just try AVG for awhile.

Odd. I've done it before for somebody else. I just needed to click the .MSI file for NAV and away it went. You have to make sure you've got the microsoft installer installed tho, but if you're using the latest Emplode then you should already have it.

In theory you can get boot sector viruses off bootable USB keys and CDROMs...
It's not totally unknown for the legit install media to have a virus on it unfortunately. It's happened before where the PC they're using to build the master disk images has a virus on and then infects the images.

Ah, I didn't know that. Of course you're right, they should let you install it separately, no question about it. Especially since they sell it as a stand alone product too. This is just plain stupid.
