Well, rather than bump up my old post on getting a new laptop, I decided to post a new one. I still haven't purchased a new laptop, but I'm getting close to figuring out what I want. I'm still mostly considering a new/refurbished Dell, but the more I look at these laptops from Alienware, the more I want one. They definitely have a high coolness factor. So, I was hoping that if anyone on this board has a Area-51m or knows anyone with one, that you could please let me know what you thought of it.

I've always been a PowerBook guy (right now I have an old G4 Ti), and as much as I'd like to purchase a new one, I really can't justify it until Apple comes out with their liquid cooled, fuel cell powered, dual G5 Powerbook.

If you want a liquid cooled powerbook, all that's needed is to take some of that drool and well...

Yeh, I have one of those apple lap burners too... but older.

Hi,

Why not go for an IBM T40 notebook. Nothing beats the keyobard on those. I've gone through numerous notebooks. Digital, Compaq, Sony, Fujitsu in that order. Now i'm on the aforementioned - and couldn't be happier with it!

Tada,
Kaare

That notebook looks real sweet, but WHOOO that's spensive. I tried the customize feature on IBM's website, but they don't let you choose any of the real features (like the processor ).

I'm a huge fan of the Sony laptops and in the past felt that they were very reasonably priced and well built.

I've had Toshiba, Dell and Sony laptops in the past. Sony and Toshiba had the best build quality. The Sony ones were nicer looking than the Toshiba however. The Dell's had good specs for the price but weren't built as nicely. I need to get a new laptop at some point, I've currently got a Dell Inspiron 8000 at the moment.
From what people have told me, IBM laptops are good but you're paying for that build quality.

I have a Sony VIAO (about a year old) and love it. It has a giant 16.1" screen and a ATi Radeon 7500 w. 32MB of video memory. I can hang pretty well with the desktop guys in online gaming.

I'm on my third Sony, and they are great - apart from the planned obsolecense. Think I'm going to go IBM next.

That's interesting. In my last laptop post everybody was recommending Dell. Now it's all Sony and IBM. Now I'm just totally confused.

Well, I like to touch my laptop before purchasing. I'm on my second Sony and I just bought one for my wife about eight months ago and at the time I couldn't find anything close to the $1,500.00 price tag being 2ghz 40GB HD, 256MB ram, built in fire wire, built in 10/100, DVD/CDRW etc.... I'm not sure of the exact model but it's very nice; I'll have to check later.

I still like shopping Dell Refurb. You get them cheaper with the same warranty as a new Dell. And I've been extremely happy with my Latitude D800.
