Well, my messenger 4.7 (the last worthwhile messenger IMO) no longer works on the MSN messenger network. I had to d/l messenger 6 to get on. Man I hate messenger 6. It's so girly and bubblegummy. I do like the "build your own emoticons" feature, though. That could be fun.

Supposedly by Oct. 15th all 3rd party clients will also no longer work with MSN.

That's weird, since not too long ago, MS proactively told Trillian about an upcoming change to the protocol. At least they're schizophrenic as well as evil.

Well, I just read further on the subject and I guess Trillian might still work. Here's a thread. I guess the caveat is "must use at least the MSN Protocol v8."

This doesn't help for centerICQ, though, which friends of mine and I use quite a bit when we can't use msn directly on a machine. We just ssh to a server and use cicq to chat. I guess not after Oct 15th, though.

yeah. theyre breaking compatibility with all their old protocols, and any 3rd party clients that dont use the new protocol. but, trillian has already been fixed, as have a few other 3rd party clients.

I also use Centericq. Yahoo messenger support has been broken for a couple weeks now. According to the CenterICQ news page it's fixed in the CVS version but I'm gonna wait until it gets released. There's a little blurb on that page regarding the MSN situation as well.

I love Trillian.

Gaim still works as well. Although it's unclear if it will continue to work after the 15th.

3 reasons i dont primarily use trillian
1. msn 6.0.x can share audio. i use this all the time when lanning with a friend, as it sounds way better than roger wilco or some other alternatives.
2. msn 6.0.x can share webcams. thats just plain fun
3. msn 6.0.x has cool little display pictures. also fun

i do like trillian. just not as much as the new msn. i use trillian, but only to connect to the icq network.

Display pictures? You talking about the avatar pics? If so then Trillian Pro can display then. I've no idea how to set them though.

I hate to go OT in your thread, but is there something going around the AIM network, or something they changed that broke their own clients?

Every single time I try to log on, it says something like "Your buddy list and avatar can not be found, but are not lost. Try again later." I keep trying but it keeps happening. I thought it might have been because I had the latest beta, so I went to oldversion.com and downloaded an older one. The first time I fired it up I connected and everything was fine, but each subsequent time I get that message again.

Hey, someone else that uses Centericq! Yeah, I read the blurb about MSN. It really sucks that developers like Konst would have to pay to use the MSN protocol. I would seriously consider paying a small fee to use cicq simply because of its usefulness, but I don't suppose there'd be enough subscribers for Konst to afford the licensing fees. Who knows.

Trillian Pro does support webcam sharing over the Yahoo network. It does also support emoticons and avatar pictures. True, it dosen't support audio though.

Trillian Pro was well worth the donation I made a while back. Too bad I now don't run it much anymore, with it being an x86 program and all...

Me, too. It's basically all I ever use for IM.

I use it as well, when I'm in a situation where I can't use Gaim.

I used to know a couple of people that used Yahoo but then they switched to MSN. I haven't logged into my Yahoo account in months now thinking of it.
The majority of all the people I know use MSN and about 5 use ICQ.

I use Trillian just because it's not as bloated as the latest MSN and ICQ.
