I've got an XP machine that is unable to burn CDs. I didn't quite understand what the user was trying to tell me the symptoms were, so I tried myself.

Using Nero, I gathered some audio files and tried a test burn. When the popup window with the burn activity info came up, it brought up a window asking me where I'd like to save the disc image.

I cancelled and saw that Nero didn't see a profile for a CD burner, only an image creator.

Here is the drive installed in the machine. I can't really find software for it, but I assume Windows would set it up as a writeable drive.

How do I correct this? And by correct I mean make the drive writeable by a program like Nero.

Did it ever work ?

Is the version of Nero an oem one that came with a different burner. The version that came with my memorex dvd-rw won't work with a different burner.

I just did a search for the word "recognize" and it came up with a whole bunch of results, so i'm sure you'll find your answer there.

Make sure you have the newest update for Nero. Nero only works with drives it knows, so if the version you are running is older then the drive, this is most likely the problem.

It's a retail version of Nero, but I got it some time ago. I'll try the updates and see if that fixes it.

Yep. Upgrade first, most problems are fixed by making sure you're running the latest version. Especially with something like Nero.

Oddly enough I know people that are phobic about upgrading. My old boss insisted on running Windows 95 and Office 97, because it was "more stable", "more secure", and of course "more compatible." Eeesh.
