... and I think I'd like to buy one of the remaining docks if one becomes available. At first, I didn't really understand why I might want one, but now that I've seen pictures of people's installations I've changed my mind.

I don't recall what the price was on these. I'm not on the list but I might be interested in a sled for the casa.

There's one of mine painted up at work... with power switch. =]

You know, you don't have to peel the stickers off of a Rubik's Cube to cheat-solve it. It's possible to dismantle those things without peeling the stickers...

And, even better, it's possible to put it back together in an insoluble state.

ACTUALLY.... the stickers are worn off from use! I used to be able to solve it in under 5 minutes... now it takes me more like 10 unless i forget a step and screw it up.

The clear plastic starts peeling off after about a week of good use. Which explains why Rubik's never just made the color INTO the plastic... so people have to buy another... and another...

Loren I dig the painted dock... any tips?

I just took it all apart. Seperated the umm... seperator panel that the fan and docking connector are on completely out and removed all the hardware that is screwed in. Then you just have the top and bottom parts of the dock. I masked the runners, and most of the back of the dock with masking tape, then just applied 3 or so coats of run of the mill rustoleum black spray paint. The finish is rougher than i would have liked.... so my only advice is to sand it very lightly with some fine grit paper just to get any loose particles and rough spots, then wipe it off with a damp cloth and let it dry. THEN paint it. I just layed it down on some card board and did one side at a time. i'm going to do some stenciling on my other dock if i ever get around to it.

It looks better up close... that pic sorta stinks.

With this material, I find one can get good results by sanding AFTER the first coat is on -- first coat kinda stabilizes the works, so sanding between the coats can really make a big difference. Mind you, sanding between coats is always a good idea regardless.

Isn't it standard practice to use linseed oil as a primer / base coat before putting the real paint on? There's an amusing article about the Steinway Piano company in the NY Times where they talk about the process of making pianos. Quoth the article:

Soon a worker, Jeremy Shepherd, was sponging linseed oil on the rim. "You've got to fill the pores," Mr. Senia said. "That's important, so the lacquer doesn't go in and damage the wood. This way, you know you'll have a smooth finish."

Never heard of that... but this is MDF, and i'm not gonna treat it like it's going to be a Steinway. Though it is a work of art in and of itself. heheh.

Five minutes? Jeez, Loren, you should be able to do it in under two, unless the cube is as stiff as pitch. Just look around on the web for some solutions - the one that comes with the cube these days involves only five patterns and a huge amount of unnecessary work.

My current challenge is to randomly do six moves without looking at it, and then try to figure out how to put it back in exactly six moves. It's tougher than it sounds...

Hahah. Yeah, i just wanted to learn to do it with the fewest possible move combos to remember... which was 4 in my case. I looked into one of the speed solving method recently, but just haven't found the time to wrap my head around it.
