Just a quick thought. . .

Because I'm lazy , I was wondering if there is any way to create an .upgrade type image. I'd like to pull off all the software and configuration, etc and create an image. Sort of a backup for people who like to add all kinds of things that take a while to configure. When something goes wrong (since I mess with it so much, it often does ) you could just load your last backup.

I had been wondering about this myself. Good question. I wonder if the Empeg folks would mind if we reverse-engineered that file format? Sure would make distribution of custom kernels/logos/configs simpler for the end-user.

Exactly. I'm sure a lot of people have been thinking the same thing, it would take a lot of the pain out of reloading all that software. I doubt we'd have to reverse-engineer the file format, <hint>the guys@empeg are kind enough to just release documentation on the file format and a utility to create the image and/or source on how to create it.</hint>

Having broken my configs more times then I can count, I just made a script under /drive0/working , which did all the necessary work to restore from developer version to my version.. that way, getting my config back is just a matter of imaging w/ developer version, then running that script...

...I think drive manufacturers love me!

True. I do have a few things kept safe in /drive0/save, but I still thought actually being able to create my own image would be nice.

Hey isn't it just a normal .gz zip file? read throught the skript "g." in the player directory that installs it!! Why would you go to all the trouble of developing a special binary file format for such a simple thing? There's nothing secret there.

Yes there is. The 'g' script on developer builds _only_ installs the player. Generally, the player build scripts on our compile box create a player.gz, which we Zmodem over to the unit. The g script saves some typing when we extract it.

The .upgrade file contains a bunch of other stuff, not just the player, e.g. it has a section that describes the changes to be made to the flash memory.

To emphasise, the 'g' script has nothing to do with .upgrade files.

We may release format specs for the .upgrade file at some point, however.
